I’m currently building this sculptured stand-up desk in the shop. The construction includes a full-length wooden hinge for the lid. Here is the SketchUp model with the lid closed and open.
I’ve finished building the hinge in the shop. I’m using a 5/16-in. dia. ash rod for the pin. This week I’ll work on the drawers for these openings. The two drawers will be accessible from the front and the back of the desk.
The following video will show how I made the hinge in SketchUp. Making this in SketchUp provides a great insight in the process to use in the shop. I’m often finding a strong alignment between procedures in SketchUp and shop work. The lid is actually made of 12 pieces, 6 for the top half, and 6 for the longer bottom half. The boring for the hinge pin, was done for each piece separately before gluing up.
The hinge barrel is rounded on the front edges. Use the Arc Tool to create the shapes. Be sure to watch for the magenta color showing a tangent connection. Then clear out the waste with the Push/Pull Tool. Remove the extra surface lines by using the Smoothing function.
To make a precise alignment and connection of these two pieces, I’ll switch to Xray and use the circle centers for exact relocation.
Now we have one segment of the of the lid. It will take 6 widths to make it full size. I’ll copy one segment, then type x 5 to string out another 4 segments.
The front edge of the lid is slightly rounded in shape and I have already established this shape as shown here.
