Mission Dining Table
For many years, my wife and I looked for a dining room chair that we both liked. Finally, a while back we agreed on a style and after confirming that A, I did not feel comfortable building chairs yet, and B, I really didn’t have time to learn right now we purchased a set of 6.
We looked at tables and saw designs we liked from $4,000 and up. My wife commissioned me to build a suitable table, so after sketches and lots of back and forth and consulting we came up with a design which we both liked that is simple and very strong, yet is totally knock down
all wood was milled to a final thickness of 7/4ths except the aprons on the sides which were 5/4th’s
32″ high x 42″ wide x 82″ long with the leaf in it will easily fit 8, and could do 10 if you want to get cozy
all mortise and tenon joints are draw bored with hand made dowels, table expander was purchased at Lee Valley Tools in Edmonton as was the bed knock down hardware used for the leg assemblies
Finished with 2 tone min wax stain, red mahogany followed by red chestnut, spray sealed with 3 coats of shellach followed up with 4 coats of water based satin finished polyurethane from min wax. Scuff sanded to 320 grit between each coat
bottom rail is held in place with very simple oak wedge into through mortises. After 30 years on a small 30″ x 60 inch solid pine table this is a massive solid table we could dance on
thank you to my sweet wife for her awesome design details that really pulled it together
