Curved Dresser
Someone told me that Walt Disney once said that furniture should look like it wants to get up and dance. I think this projects meets that goal. The project is constructed with bent lamination. The carcass is curly maple, the drawer fronts are jatoba and zebra wood, and the top and drawer pulls are purpleheart.

Very cool. I would like to see what the drawers look like inside--an open drawer for example. Jatoba and Zebra wood are beautiful.
It's dancing!... I am wondering about how difficult it was to get the drawers to function smoothly and properly, given their shapes. It makes me smile.
Totally awesome! Great imagination!
Thanks for your comments. I have edited the post to show an open drawer. The sides are flat and angled to fit in the carcass. I typically dovetail both front and back corners of the drawers. A maple guide below and to the outer bottom corner of the sides keep the drawers on track. I had some concern about the drawers initially, but after waxing they glide nicely. Some people who have seen it are concerned that the clothes will slide to the lower corner, but that doesn't seem to be an issue.
By the way, as to style, besides Disney, some people have mentioned Dr Suess and Alice in Wonderland.
Very nice.
It reminds me of something from Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland.
Good job.
What a wonderful design, it is the essence of fun. I am new to woodworking and it is because of pieces like yours that I have decided to give it a try.
If one is looking for a defintion of a "cure for the common cabinet", this has got to be it! While I believe all of the entrants are terrific, this dresser is a marvelous example of creativity, a unique piece in and of itself and an engineering masterpiece. Where else can one find his underwear & socks rolled over into one corner of his dresser?
Seriously though, it is light, cheerful, whimsical, elegant and flawless in its execution. The combination of the contrasting woods further enahnces the appeal of this particular entry.
I love it. It looks like a character from "Beauty and the Beast". The chest just flows like a dancer -- and it seems like it's just stepped into place on the dance floor. Great piece of work! Thanks for sharing the photos.
Fun house mirror furniture. That is great. You should make a complete bedroom set.

This exquisite piece of art masquerading as a dresser could find its home in Barcelona in the Casa Batila (Batlla) or any of the elegant homes in Parc Guell which Antonio Gaudi designed. Arcs and curves derive from what we see in the creation and this exquisite dresser reflects what Gaudi consistently advocated and what we consistently see in our world--more curves than angles. Superb!!
