Properly set up and operated, a mortising machine cuts straight, square-sided mortises in relatively short order. The author had eight benchtop models shipped to his shop for a close examination. The Delta 14-651 offers a  toolless method for securing the hold-down to the shaft; a riser block kit, which adds about 1-3/4 in. to the plunge depth of the mortiser; a better-than-average fence; and the best access to the drill chuck. A gap at the fence bottom allows chips and sawdust to escape. A good choice for the money.
