Attach Tabletops with Beveled Cleats
For a clean and Craftsman-like appearance start with a one-cut dovetailTabletops are susceptible to a great deal of wood movement throughout the seasons, which means you must take care when attaching a table top to its base. In this video, furniture maker and woodworking instructor Mario Rodriguez demonstrates one fail-proof technique with a dovetail cleat. Start by ripping a 3-in.-wide hardwood strip with the tablesaw blade tilted to a 15° angle. Half of the cleat is screwed to the tabletop; the other is tenoned and fitted to the mortised aprons. On small tables, the top is attached at each end, but for tables longer than 48 in., a center support is necessary.
