Improved Miter Gauge Runner
Over the years, I’ve seen many plans for homemade jigs that utilize a hardwood runner that fits in the miter-gauge slot. But, because wood shrinks and expands depending on the humidity, the runner’s fit and, hence, the jig’s accuracy will vary. To correct the problem, cut the runner a bit undersize so that it is loose in the slot. Then install four 1/2-in-long brass screws in countersunk holes along one edge of the runner. You can adjust the screws to get a perfect fit, regardless of the humidity. The brass screws won’t wear the sides of the slot and are easily replaced if they wear out.
