A router with badly worn brushes won't run well; here are some maintenance tips

There is no sure guideline for how often to check router brushes for wear. Most owner’s manuals recommend a check every 50 to 100 hours of running time. But that isn’t easy to track, so John White, shop manager at Fine Woodworking, recommends checking them once or twice a year. In this video, John demonstrates the procedure on two common types of routers and tells what to look for once you have the brushes removed.
