Making an Arts and Crafts Chair
Explore the design and construction of this project and see how the back splat is constructed and assembled.
Furniture maker Kevin Rodel walks through the design and construction of this sturdy and comfortable Arts and Crafts dining chair featured as a project in Fine Woodworking #190.
Filmed in his workshop near Brunswick, Maine, Rodel also demonstrates how to cut and assemble the parts for the decorative curved back splat, which Rodel calls “the visual anchor of the chair.”

Having bought the plans it would be icing on the cake if a video series were made of making the entire chair. How about it FWW?
Trying to find the plans now but having difficulty. Where did you find yours?
Agree with michaelait.
Kevin what brand is your sliding Table Saw? Nice chair construction.
His saw was so inspiring, we did a video on it! https://www.finewoodworking.com/2017/02/08/dream-machines-kevin-rodels-ulmia-1710-sliding-tablesaw
Kevin: how did you do the BEND on the upper and lower back pieces. I've tried to bend white oak by steaming and jigging.,., not successful.
Bluedog
According to the article, they are sawn out of thicker pieces of wood, not bent.
I have built 18 of these chairs and 3 of the hay-rake tables for my family. I decided to use Cherry. I used Festool dominos for my tenons.
