Making Music with Precision Woodworking
Maker of concert-level wooden flutes employs precision techniques and a touch of the hand craftFlute maker Chris Abell details his process for producing high-end wooden flutes made from exotic lumbers, such as African blackwood and pink ivory, in this video filmedĀ at his Asheville, North Carolina, workshop.
Abell creates high-end flutes that are used by orchestral musicians and recording artists of the highest caliber. To create the high-quality sound, Abel takes a metalworking approach to his instrument making, requiring zero-tolerance results from his tools. Only the mouthpiece is crafted by hand.
Each flute takes about one month to build. However, the wood sits in his shop for up to eight years. Tune in to see his tools and workshop and learn about his meticulous process.
