Touring the Grovewood Gallery
North Carolina furniture gallery celebrates crafts for nearly a centuryIn this video tour, we take a look at one of the leading furniture galleries in the country, the Grovewood Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina. Carla Filippelli, director of the gallery’s studio furniture collection, shows off the work of some the 600 artists and woodworkers represented by Grovewood Gallery. She also shares some of the history behind this this nearly 100-year-old artisan’s mecca.
In addition to its showroom, the 11-acre facility also hosts two museums and studio workshops for several area craftsman, including Bill Whipple, a furniture maker and instrument maker, and Chris Abell, a maker of concert-level wooden flutes. It is also houses the headquarters of The Furniture Society, an organization of studio furniture makers from the U.S. and Canada.
