How to Sharpen a Mortiser Bit
Most hollow chisels simply don’t work out of the box. Here's how to tune them up and keep them sharp.
Whether you’ve purchased a new hollow-chisel mortiser or your existing machine is ready for a tune-up, preparing your hollow chisels is the first place to start. Contributing editor Roland Johnson details the tools and techniques for sharpening hollow chisels in this video. He covers techniques for sharpening the bevel, improving chip ejection, and sharpening the center auger bit.

I sure needed to see these sharpening tips for my mortising bits and chisel edges. I have bits up to 3/4" used on a Walker drill press that was my grandpas back in the 50's. These bits still work well but when mortising oak found them to be difficult to get into and out of the wood. Now I can sharpen them properly inside and out thanks to your video. I also have a modern dedicated mortising machine but it has it's limitations as it doesn't go larger than a 1/2" bit and that's when the drill press takes over. Thanks again for your tips.
Awful video. Rollie's info is great but it needs a different videographer that knows how and when to do close-ups. Well over half of Rollie's important tips are lost as we can't view them in any meaningful detail.
Totally agree!
I agree that we need to see more close ups but Rollie's information and the way he delivers it is really good.
Always enjoy and learn from Roland's instructional videos.
Unfortunately many of the important points in this presentation are partially lost in translation because there were not enough close ups as the instructions were given.
This was from 2006. Agree enjoy his knowledge.
What is the name of the English company that Roland mentions that sells the reamers to sharpen the chisels
This couldn't have come at a more appropriate time. I just bought a Grizzly benchtop mortiser which came with 4 bits. I'll be checking them out. I'll pick up some sandpaper at Woodcraft this weekend.
I have to agree with 4 of the other commenters, this needs some good closeups. One bad thing with FWW is that many of their videos were done years ago and should be redone.
Can the 45 deg. chisel be reground to 60 deg.? I certainly don't see any reason it can't be.
I suggest you also view Bob Van Dyke's video on the same topic. He offers a better view of some of the techniques you'll need to employ. Happy Sharpening!
