FWW Poll: Garage as Shop
1 in 3 do their woodworking in an attached garage, and 1 in 4 use all or part of the basement. An attached garage often doubles as the woodshop, according to the latest poll on Knots, the user forum on FineWoodworking.Com. Twenty-nine percent of the 1,863 people who responded described their shop that way. And one in four said they use all or part of a basement for their woodworking. The graph below gives the specifics.
Another 1 in 3 respondents (31 percent) said they either have a separate building dedicated to woodworking or use a detached garage strictly as the shop.
Other woodshop arrangements vary widely. Here’s a sampling from the Knots postings:
“Outbuilding/barn shared with horses.”
“I’ve got a building in an industrial park, about 7,000 sq. ft. of shop and office.”
“My driveway. I have a shed that holds my tools and a carport over my driveway. I have made many projects out there.”
“Which phrase best describes my shop? A disaster! Way too small, way too dusty, no room for proper finishing, not usable in the winter because it has no heat, hard to use in the summer because if I open the doors the skeeters attack me. All in all, I love the time I get to spend out there! Sort of like Heaven On Earth!”
“I have a 40×60-ft. air-conditioned outbuilding with 12 30-amp 110v circuits, four 3-phase 220v circuits, full dust collection and several compressed air outlets. Separate 15×20-ft. paint/finish room, and a kitchen area with a fridge for ‘beverages.’ Oh, wait! That was just a dream.”
The poll is a completely unscientific (but, we hope, thoroughly entertaining) part of FineWoodworking.Com. There’s a new poll on the home page.
