Filmmaker David C. Thompson directed this dreamy and atmospheric short film of California furniture maker Jared Rusten building his trademark Palo Alto chair (photo right), which is named for the Silicon Valley locale and looks equally as hip.
Set to music by Vetiver (with permission) and shot with an 8mm movie camera, the film glides through the process of cutting and assembling this unique chair — although sometimes out of sequence — including preparing thick planks for the seat and back and assembling the gravity-defying parts.
Rusten, who is currently living in Brooklyn and working on a commission to make the woodwork and furniture for an architect-designed bar, recently migrated east from California. “I plan to be around for a few years, but I’m anxious to get back to my hometown and the 1,000 board feet of walnut slabs I had to leave there,” Rusten said in an email.

I did enjoy the film and the technique displayed, but please, save your lungs and get any kind of shop vacuum system. I almost had an asthma attack just by watching you build your beautiful chair.

Jared-
This must have been a challenge.
The only complaint is that we didn't get to see you sitting in the chair!
