Maloof Memories: Phil Wendt
When it feels right, it isWhen I first began reading about Sam and his furniture I just loved the overall look of his designs. As a woodworker, I was overwhelmed at the prospect of ever even aspiring to attain such a level of craftsmanship in my own work. As time went on, I kept going back to Sam’s books and articles and was inspired to try some of his joinery techniques. I had already been using his oil-varnish finish for many years.
After playing with Sam’s rabbeted-dado joint that he uses on his rockers, I decided to build a piece using this joint. I wanted a pair of barstools for our new home and started my design process with this question: “If Sam Maloof built a barstool, what might it look like?” After hours of drawing, and first building a prototype, I realized how much Sam’s designs are not just about joinery. His “organic” style must flow from somewhere within, and when you get it right it just feels right.
This barstool was the result (there is a pair). I chose bubinga and used his finish. Building this stool was a sea change for me in how I look at the design and building process. Understanding how each element just seems to flow into the next yields something greater than the sum of its parts. Sam’s influence will be seen in much of what I produce. I could never copy Sam’s work, but his inspiration will last for the rest of my woodworking life. I will still miss him.
