Over the next few months, I’ll be writing a book on Blanket Chests for The Taunton Press. The first chapter will offer an overview of techniques for building chests. The balance of the book will contain a collection of about 35 chests, each designed and contributed by a different maker.
I’m writing to ask if you may be interested in submitting a chest for consideration. All submissions must be postmarked by August 15, 2009 to be considered. For this initial judging, I ask that you send a photo, drawing or sketch to represent your piece to my email address below. We will consider works that have not yet been built only if there is enough detail in the working plan to give us a good idea of what the finished chest will be. In selecting the pieces, I’ll be assisted by two editors from Taunton. For return of submitted materials, please provide a self-addressed stamped envelope with adequate postage.
If accepted, you’ll need to supply a scaled drawing, with measurements, that provides enough information for Taunton artists to render an accurate, exploded drawing. I’ll also ask for publishable photos of the finished piece and any available detail shots, along with the rights to use these photos in the book, on Taunton’s Web site and for other promotional efforts as well as in downloadable plans (see below). Lastly, I’ll send a questionnaire for you to complete that will help me write the text that will accompany your chest.
Taunton intends to sell downloadable plans for each chest. In return, they offer a royalty on the net sale of each download. This will be negotiated once your piece is accepted for publication.
With so many moving parts to this project, keeping the schedule on track will be very important. Please consider your workload and existing commitments before signing-on.
I am excited to be working with Scott Gibson on this project. Between the two of us and all of you, we will craft an informative, useful and imaginative book that provides an insightful look into a wide array of designs.
Please don’t hesitate in contacting me with any questions.
thanks, Peter
