For the average amateur woodworker, the title of Jeff Jewitt’s new book “Spray Finishing Made Simple”, published by Taunton, may seem an oxymoron. After all compared to wiping or brushing on a finish where all you need are a cloth or a brush, spraying requires a spray booth, a spray gun, and either a compressor or a turbine.
However, there is a reason that professional finishers spray almost all their finishes; it’s fast and it’s flawless, so it is worth the investment in time and tools to learn how to spray finish. Jewitt begins with where to spray including options for temporary spray booths, and then covers your options when it comes to equipment and how to set it up correctly. This last point is particularly helpful because spray guns and compressors rarely have good information in their manuals for how to link the two together.
You also learn about spraying techniques and how to spray clear finishes, stains and even paint. Combining a book and a DVD means you get the best of both worlds – the in depth detail that only print can provide, and the animated instruction of spraying techniques in particular that printed photos can only hint at.
I hope a lot of woodworkers take the plunge into spraying, they won’t find a more helpful guide to get them started and the $25 is a good investment.
