Free Plan: Drill press shelf
It’s amazing how simple things can make your woodworking life much easier, especially for somebody like me who has never taken to wearing an apron while I’m woodworking. My typical method of operation involves shoving a pencil in my hair and a ruler in my back pocket. So I’m quick to jump on any tip that will help me keep the other paraphernalia organized as I go. This easy-access shelf for drill press accessories makes working on the drill press more efficient, and it is simple to make and attach to your drill press.

That is a great and easy, and the scost is great!!
This plan is poorly designed, it is designed to sag and fail. Try reinforcing with a collar glued under the tray, on the tray side plus a collar on top and instead of wood screws use 5/16" flathead machine bolts with flat and lock washers on both sides.
good idea but to take it further i would suggest a strut from the shelf to the column with another collar preferably in metal with a wing nut to loosen and tighten
A simpler drill press shelf can be made by supporting the shelf with one of those inexpensive stamped "L" shelf brackets. The channel stamped into each arm for added rigidity helps center it on post. Use wood screws to attach one arm to the bottom of the shelf and then clamp the verticle arm to the column of the drill press with one or two a hose clamps. Done. No need to cut out shelf or use a mounting collar.
This IS a good idea. The clamp around the collar lets you put the tray high under the head. A strut using the idea of the shelf bracket is a good one: put it underneath and in the center of the cutout for the column. Smaller is better. This thing won't be holding much weight so don't be inclined to over build it.
My shelf has been on the drill press for over two years and it holds a set of drills, plug cutters and stop blocks. It swings around the column with ease if needed. It sure beats the flimsy plastic one I was going to buy.
