My "box-seat" project. I created this dual-purpose project using props from my upcoming book on blanket chests. At this stage, I had finished weaving the seat, bolted on the box then took this shot.
It’s been a while since I posted a call for blanket chest designs for my book. In that time, we chose 30 chests for inclusion. Scott Gibson has been working with each maker to hone their answers to our questionnaire into accompanying text for their piece. He’s also made several visits to my shop for photos that will illustrate the techniques chapters. Everything is coming together for a March 15, 2011 release date.
Props become an actual piece of furniture
So while the book project is underway, I just finished another woodworking project using “leftovers” from creating the book. I needed to build some “stunt parts” for technique photos and chose poplar. I sized some of these props so that they could become part of a new piece called “boxseat”.
The poplar box–its frame and panel bottom, and its sliding, dovetailed tray–moved from the photos, into this piece. I’m offering it for sale, here, in the FW classified ads. I used Rockler's torsion hinges. They work just like the hinges on a laptop, allowing the lid to hold at any angle.

I wove a traditional Danish cord pattern using 3mm braided hemp cord. I love the texture it brings into play.

Each of the 6 legs is joined to the bench frame with wedged through tenons.

This was a test to size the holes for the threaded inserts for the bottom of the box. These allow the box to be easily unbolted and reversed so that the seat can be either to the left or the right of the box.
