Lie-Nielsen has a tail vise ($275 for the hardware and $130 for the jaw) that’s better than any I’ve used. The tail-vise hardware rides in grooved slides. One of the slides is adjustable so you can fine-tune the fit between the moving steel plate and the slides it rides in. I had a chance to try it on a friend’s bench, but unfortunately, my narrow shop doesn’t have enough room to open a tail vise to a useful length. So I guess I’ll have to wait until I have a bigger shop to buy one for myself.
