I believe it is a record for me – that is, the number of templates used in one piece of furniture. Without them I would be lost. There are no square angles on a Maloof design – this one, an “occasional chair”. Although it takes some time to model-up the chair, SketchUp delivers the products that enable my building of such a complex piece. I am sharing this design with my students who are also in the process of replicating the chair.

We’ve covered the process for producing full-size templates in several previous blog entries. There are only a few things to remember:

1.  You need to using a standard camera view such as Front, Right Side, Left Side, or Top View
2. Your Camera needs to be set for Parallel Projection (not the normal Perspective)
3. And in the Print Dialog Box, make sure you uncheck Fit to Page, and set scale to 1:1

When I’m working in the shop, I print these full-size pages on my standard 8 1/2 x 11 printer straight from SketchUp. You can do this in your free version. I patch the pages together and stick to poster board.

Of course, there is plenty of work to go – all the sculpturing and shaping that is the essence of a Maloof. I suppose you could also sculpture and shape in SketchUp, but I find this too difficult and really unnecessary. I’m happy to have the rough band-sawed version in SketchUp. I don’t need SketchUp for the artistic expression with hand tools.
