Hello. Please help! I am a beginner woodworker, and have to decide upon a finish for a double-gate-legged drop-leaf table I have sanded all the finish off to prepare for refinishing. It appears there are several types of wood and veneers in this table. I do not have spray equipment, but want to use a lacquer, if possible to wipe or brush one on, as the table will be for my daughter who has one year old twins, and she's asked for a durable finish. IF there is a brush on lacquer, what kind of stain must I use under it to be compatible? Also, if I use lacquer, can I seal the wood before staining? I need to know what sealer, stain and finish is compatible for a hard, durable finish, to survive a lifetime of little children, and the basics of application- ie, how many coats to apply to achieve the strong finish I need, without looking like poured plastic! Thank you in advance for your help.
