The New Best of Fine Woodworking: Working with Routers
Taunton Press, 2004.
$17.95; 160 pp.
Working with Routers is a collection of articles from the pages of Fine Woodworking magazine. In it you’ll learn about:
router safety and maintenance
using a router for joinery and decorative details
router jigs
router tables (including a few project articles to make horizontal or
bench-mounted router tables)
router templates
The portable router has been described as the “most resourceful power tool” in the shop because it can do so much. This book contains the information to help you get the most out of your router(s).

I still love real books, but sometimes I think an iPad, if it had a rugged case, would be good to store magazine articles in, so that I could cross reference them in my shop. Are there any really shop proof iPad cases? until then, I'll read books, even the ones that are made up of re arranged old magazine articles from back issues I already have.
It would be neat to take a look at this.
This would be an interesting book since I do a lot of cutting with my router (I have the same one that is on the cover).
Though I own the router in the picture on the cover of the book, I don't own the book. Don't you owe me one due to copyright law or something???
I love my router and what it can do, my problem is my router skills are terrible, something always flys across the room or the router chokes and gouged the workpiece. I'd love the book, really !
This looks like a great book to add to my collection. Learning more about the router would be very helpful.
Hope i win
thanks
I just set up a router table this weekend. The stow-and-go router table I found here on Fine Wood Working.
The problem is I have two used hand-me-down routers, in desperate need of something better.
Loved to win the book though..love books.
I would love to know how to use my router! Right now I use it for rounding over corners. Just putting a little bit of detail on the kids kitchen sets I have been making. I've also used it to make a coat hook board more decorative as well, but sadly that's all I've really done with it so far. I like to gawk at the bits in the store, but I have no idea what to do with them. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
I'd love to get my hands on that book, free or paid. I only got into woodworking when I bought my first house two years ago. It has become a wonderful and relaxing hobby since then. The projects have all been necessary cabinet and box work so far. My daughter now has a lovely new oak toy box for her many stuffed animals and pointy feet killers. Next up, I'm taking on the Morris chair. Lots of pattern bit routing.
My router is my favorite tool, but would love to learn more.
I have a couple questions about the cover photo:
Will the cut-off chips/dust come out the hose hook-up and hit the user in the temple?
And why is my bench never that clean when I use a router?
Does the book come with that fancy router fence? ;)
I'd love to see this book.Looks like some good information.
I would enjoy this book. Thanks for the offer.
Having four routers, I would love to have a book about them as well. Followed router tables, inserts, jigs and such in Fine Woodworking, and have applied many to my own pieces. There are times when other tools may be called for, but a good router and table may just make it easier and more accurate. Love to see which ones are in the book.
Maybe if I'd use decent clamps I wouldn't gouge my work when trying to route my rabbets and dadoes...
I now have more routers than sense. A book about the routers would be nice, as well as a little more sense.
I would like this book please!
I need that book and increase my skills on routers, it's the most versatil tool I have. I only have one do.
This is a great book. I've checked it out many times at the library... but would sure love to own a copy. Thanks.
I would enjoy learning more about using routers. Thanks for the opportunity.
My comment Haiku:
Routers are handy
But I won't use one without
Hearing protection
I suffer from router fear. I would use it more by learning how bets to use it.
This roils be a great book to learn more about using my router.
I have used a router, but not proficient with it. Articles from the best in it's use "wood" help. I've seen this book before and wanted it, and I wouldn't mind winning it.
yes please....New Zealand needs more books
Come on FWW. I need this book!
I inherited an old router from my grandfather a few years ago. I recently upgraded it to a more modern set. The set I bought came with a motor, a fixed base, and a plunge base. I bought a couple of beginner bits and I want to make my own router table. I think I can get more value with the money if I just purchased the materials separately. Any router table plans in the book?
I have 2 routers one my wife bought and one I inherited, I know that they could be one of the most usefull tools in my shop but I'm just not proficient with them, I wish I was. This book could really help me out.
We just recently bought a router & router table combo and are pretty new to woodworking, so this book would be a godsend to us! Thanks for offering it to your readers!
I have a router -- no wait I have several -- I guess I have five and I'm considering another one. I suppose I should have a book to learn how to use them.
Routing, it's what all the kids are doing these days.
Any help I can get working with my router by hand would be great
You can always pick up router tricks on the web, but to have them all in one book and at your fingertips, would be really neat !!
I can't get by without my routers. Any new tricks I could learn would be great!
A chance to learn more about routers. Sign me up!
Taunton Press books are great - I would love to have this one to complement my router skills.
This would be great, count me in.
This is a terrific resource for learning how to use and maintain your router. Taunton publications are always of the highest quality and value. I would like to see information on overarm routers. I haven't found a resource for this type of router and would find it invaluable.
This looks like yet another great book for a woodworking library, count me in.
Fantastic ! Something for free. I rarely see that anymore. Thanks for the opportunity.
Sure, I'd be happy to help you guys out and take it off your hands.
Yep,something for free is always welcome.
You guys have inspired so much. I have gotten more into handtools. I built a workbench like Matt Kenney's, but definitely need to learn not to fear my router! Here's hoping I win.
Sounds like a good book to have for a very important power tool.
I would love a chance to win this book. Always looking to learn more about the versatile router.
I could really use this! Pick me...pick me!
Raises hand.
I'm never one to pass up the chance at a freebie. Please throw my hat in the ring.
I'll go wait by my mailbox for my book!
Add me to the (long) list of people that would like to win this.
This looks like the book I need. I have read many books on all the other power tools I have, but none on the router.

As many of you, I love the router and I will be VERY happy if I´m the lucky one to win this book! Thanks FW for giving a chance to expand our library!

How often can someone win one of the freebies?
Considering how many times I haven't won, the odds must be in my favor to win this one; right?
A great addition to my library.
Thanks for the post. I've been looking to build some kids kitchen sets for my two daughters to play with. I'm looking at getting a new router. Do you have any suggestions?
I'm sorry it took so long for me to get back here to write about the book. I really enjoyed it.
First, what really struck me was that although the book is not 'that old', in many ways it was already out of date. The discussion of hard to find bits that I commonly see in woodworking catalogues reminded me of the computer industry. The field has progressed really fast.
he book included many different jigs that i just have not seen anywhere else. I had been thinking of saving up for a dovetail jig, but now I have been inspired to make my own.
