In “Furniture with Soul: Master Woodworkers and their Craft”, author David Savage celebrates those woodworkers whose pieces are more than “simply well made or that demonstrate fine workmanship”. He profiles twenty furnituremakers and designers including Michael Hurwitz, Judy Kensley McKie, John Cederquist, Gary Know Bennett and John Makepiece who push the boundries of wooden furniture to the limit. A furniture maker for 35 years, Savage is well able to explore his colleagues’ inspiration, creativity, and the struggle to turn an idea into reality.
Even if you are not a fan of contemporary design and think that there are several misses for every design hit, it is still interesting to see what these designers can do with wood, bending, laminating, sculpting it into unique shapes. Published by Kodansha International and due for release on July 1st, 2011, the list price is $45, but Amazon is offering it at a pre-release price of $29.40.
