A custom made piece of furniture is the perfect way to meet your clients’ specific furniture needs and wants. “Rustic furniture” in particular is very versatile; you can find it in a cabin, at the lake or as a creative piece in many different styles of homes. The appeal of the rustic look is the simplicity of the furniture and the fact that it has such great detail yet is made from the simplest of materials.
When designing a custom piece of furniture it is very important to start with the basics including: what are the dimensions, how many drawers, how many doors, are there any constraints getting the product into the location. Then be sure to draw up a model of the product to include how to attach the pieces and where the hardware will go, it is always easiest to make changes on paper.
There are a lot of little features that can be added to a piece of rustic furniture to create an even more unique design. A few additional options are custom rustic hardware, custom stains or laser engraved pine boughs. The possibilities are truly endless. The following are a few sample projects.
When building a custom made rustic bar it is important to think about the layout and everything you want in the bar. Things to think about are, how far out into the room it will go, adding angles into the design, a refrigerator, wine rack, drawer storage, open or closed shelving, a locked cabinet and anything else you may want.
A custom made rustic desk can include a ton of different features depending on your space, needs and wants. When you are thinking about the style of desk you want a few things to keep in mind, are you going to use a computer at the desk, do you want a file cabinet, do you need a keyboard tray or a pencil drawer. More custom made features include: an L shaped desk, book shelves or upper cabinets for storage. A few additional questions to think about are: is it important to you to hide the wires from computers or telephones, how are you going to get proper lighting at the desk?
A custom made rustic bathroom vanity can be designed to fit in any size or shape bathroom. It is very important to make sure you know if it is going to be going up against a side wall on one end, both ends or is it free standing. You also want to think about the location of your sink, do you want it centered or off to one side. With a custom made rustic vanity you have many options for the top surface, you can do a wood top with a liquid glass finish, granite top, or a more basic ceramic or laminate top. You also need to think about the style, size and style of sink you will be using. Once you have your sink location it is good to figure out the drawer/shelving options. One other thing to keep in mind with designing a custom rustic vanity, make sure you plan the height and depth of the finished product so that you know it is not going to interfere with any trim work in the room.
