If you live in the northeast and you’re planning a Catskills vacation this summer, leave some room in your luggage for your hand planes; you might want to stop at a little place that opened recently in the hills just outside Albany.
The folks at Banner Hill School of Fine Arts and Woodworking, in Windham, NY, sent us a note this week to let us know about their facility. It sounds pretty nice.
A 19th century timber-frame barn houses the school, the three-story building restored by Banner Hill’s proprietor and a team of artisan builders that now serve as the school’s faculty. There is a fully equipped machine room on the first floor and a sunlit bench room upstairs, topped by gallery and office space on the third level.
If your travelling companion doesn’t happen to be a woodworker, there’s also a ceramics shop out back, along with classes on stained glass, painting and photography. Oh, and there’s the Catskills…
The school offers courses on a variety of woodworking skills ranging from half a day to 5 days in duration. Visit the school’s website for more information, and happy camping!
