I made a French cleat for a set of kitchen shelves to hold recipe books, magazines etc some years ago and it has lasted I guess over a decade now. There are no visible fixings, to remove the shelves you have to just lift them up then they will come free showing the cleat screwed to the wall. I made the cleat edges using a 45° router bit in the router table since I don't have a table saw. That worked well.
The main caveat I would offer is to make certain that your cleats (yes, there are two) are strong enough to support the weight of not only the structure, but its contents as well.
