Hi. Love these videos on dovetails, great help.
Is that a home made marking gauge or a store bought one? If store bought, what is it?
Looks like a store bought Japanese marking gauge.
Hi. In Episode 1 at the 5:49 mark you say "notice how my drawer side overhangs the drawer back ever so slightly". WHY? Is that necessary for some reason? I thought the marking gauge is set to the thickness of the boards and ,if so, shouldn't the side NOT overhang the drawer back since that baseline of the tails is set to the thickness of the boards?
He did that so the pins protrude ever so slightly. He'll plane or sand them down later. Would it be ideal to have them perfectly flush? Sure, but that's not likely to happen, and it's easier to trim them down a bit. If the pins wind up recessed, he'd have to trim down the whole drawer side, affecting the fit.
Can you give us a link Ben to the finger joint 1/4" kerf blade? I am assuming it is a flat bottomed grind on the teeth.
I can't be certain it's the one Steven was using, but in the old shop we had a Forrest finger-joint blade set.
