How did you assemble the bench top to the base?
It's not. The top is just placed on the base. Matt says it's never been an issue. I'd probably attach it with a domino or angle bracket.
Agreed, especially here in earthquake country. [Starts with a "C", ends at the Pacific Ocean.] I would suggest using two hardwood dowels of a suitable size [⅝", ¾", etc by say 3"+-] for the benchtop centered in the top. For ease of assembly I'd just ease the ends on the half inserted and glued into the trestle and I'd very slightly taper the unglued upper end of the dowels for ease of insertion and [you know it's going to happen during somebody's lifetime] disassembly.
