Chamfered Dovetails Dress Up a Rustic Bookcase
In Fine Woodworking #229, FWW associate at director John Tetreault demonstrates his tips for working with reclaimed lumber. On a small bookcase built of weathered barn boards, Tetreault used big, bold through-dovetails that stand proud of the surface. He refined the look of the joinery by chamfering the tails and pins. The piece was first dry-fit in order to mark the overhang of the pins. Next, Tetreualt used a block plane and chisels to chamfer each joinery element by hand. Once assembled, the chamfered dovetails exhibit a much more refined, purposeful look. You can see the process in action in the video above, and learn how to build and use the jig in his article, Fine Furniture from Reclaimed Wood.
