Sharpening & Tuning Hand Planes and Chisels by Hendrik Varju
Passion for Wood, 2012.
$94.95 Cdn; 8 hrs, 43 mins
Here’s a DVD set we recently received from the publisher and we gave away a copy. Lucky SAyotte was the winner.
Hendrik Varju has produced another DVD. Sharpening & Tuning Hand Planes and Chisels covers a lot of ground, starting with taking a look at sharpening stones and other supplies Varju recommends for successful sharpening. It then moves on to step-by-step instruction for tuning chisels and hand planes. Varju covers such things as inspecting the frog, grinding a back-bevel, as well as flattening the backs of chisels and hand plane blades. Next, the DVD moves into three chapters on sharpening techniques: hollow grinding, honing guides, and free-hand techniques. At over 8 hours, the DVD provides a lot of important information, and as in his other DVDs you’ll learn the techniques in real time. Varju doesn’t cut out important steps so it’s like having “Private Woodworking Instruction in a Box”.
Hendrik wrote an article for Fine Woodworking a few years ago that covers a few of the techiniques in the DVD. Check out Cut Your Honing Time in Half in issue # 199, Aug 2008.
Lucky SAyotte was the winner. His comment was chosen at random.
Be sure to check back for more give aways.

Another great installment, I'm sure!
Lets hope 8 hrs on sharpening is not dull!!!
I would like to win this DVD set.
I have been progressing but struggling at sharpening. This DVD set hopefully, could help me produce a consistent razor edge on my tools.
I love Hendrick, he's the real deal.
Trevor
Sounds great! I'd love to have one :0)
Count me in. I would like a chance to win it.
Would benefit greatly from this DVD, thx for making available.
I could use this DVD. I am a woodcarver and woodworker. I don't have any fancy sharpening equipment - just stones and a couple of grinders. You need to learn to sharpen tools to do anything.
seem like a dvd i need to turn up my chisels and planes to good working order
Hendrik's past DVDs are great so I am sure this one is well worth it too.
I love Hendrik's depth he puts into his material, he covers everything and more for your future reference. I've recently gotten sucked into hand tools and would love this one.
I could certainly use this!
Being new to sharpening but not to woodworking I have gone back to this hobby full time after being disabled. This would be a wonderful set to win from the best woodworking magazine on the market.
Razor sharp wit, JocknTexas!
I would LOVE to win and review the video! I am just getting started with my sharpening journey, and would like any help possible to Hone my skills!
This would be a HUGE help. Good luck to everyone!
Sharpening....just one of the may things I really need to improve. This DVD would be a huge help, I'm sure.
8 hrs!! should be something to learn.
Thanks for the chance to win
me too please!
This would go nicely with some chisels I'm hoping to win on another website. . .
Sharp hand tools are a must for any wood worker. This DVD will help mainatin that sharp egde in my work shop.
One of the most important processes related to fine woodworking. I would think the Varju DVD would be an excellent resource for both beginner and advanced woodworker. Thanks for giving us the chance to obtain and review it here.
Learning how to adjust and use hand planes would be a great learning tool for any wood worker. Please add me to the list.
Chris
I'm in!
Sign me up, please. Are any previews available? I would like to have a copy but see no way to justify the cost on my budget.
Im about to begin my journey in woodworking and I think this set of DVD's would help me greatly as ive inherited some old planes and chisels and could use the advise in bringing them back to life!
This would be great. I never seem to get the edge I need.
Got lots here that needs sharpening.
This would sure help!
This would be great.
I've tried a bunch of different sharpening systems over the years. Oilstones, waterstones, sandpaper on glass, etc. The common denominater in my satisfaction or dissatisfaction in my sharpening, is the amount of time/effort taken to actually practice whatever system I'm favoring at the time. But I'm always looking to improve...
Would love to have. As a newbie I have found out how much safer and how much more control you have with sharp tools.
I could use the help!!
Please add one to my shelf, when I get my tools sharp, then actually build the shelf. Thanks.
Although I have several power tools I find myself moving to pick up a hand tool more frequently recently. I have really come to appreciate how much easier a job is when a chisel or plane is scary sharp and not just "sort of" sharp. I am really just starting to develop my skills in sharpening, with the help of great magazines , both paper and online, but I have not yet invested in a major reference such as this set would be. This would move my woodworking to a new level.
I think I'm making ok progress with my sharpening skills, but this would be a great resource!
Hendrick does a nice and thorough job on everything he does. I expect this DVD to be no different.
I still struggle with sharpening so this would really be of use to me.
Always great to see new DVDs on woodworking.
Put my name in the hat. Hendrik is always great.
Sure, I could use another DVD.
Cheers,
-----wade
This would be a great DVD to own

This is needed to help me so I can have sharper hand tools. I spent two & a half days sharping Chisels and plane blades. They are a lot sharper, but I think they could be sharper. This book would help me learn a better way to sharpen tools and get good real sharp tools.
Great!
I am keen on this giveaways ...
I love the way Hendrick teaches, clear, to the point and easy to follow, I'd love to have this DVD set. Good luck to all.
Would love to own the DVD collection. I have developed quite a library of woodworking video's and this one would help complete my set. Can't wait to see the quality that I have come to expect from you guys!
I can't wait to use this to fix up my grandpa's old planes!
I would love to own this video set!
The DVD set would be nice to have to hone my skills in
sharpening.
I viewed a sample of the DVD and looks great. Hope to win this one.
Looks like a great DVD--I'd love to win it!

That looks like a great educational resource. I would love to have one!
Hendrik is a great teacher of the craft.
The fundamentals of handtool woodworking. Can always learn more!
sounds good, be interesting to see whether he has some new ideas
It's nice to see a comprehensive, all in one place source for sharpening info. I believe that sharpening is the biggest hurdle that beginning and intermidiate woodworkers face. Seems like a nice solution.
I am in need of sharpening help - can't wait to finally get the help I need!
This would be a nice addition to the growing library for a school I hope to start.

Almost 9 hours. That's even longer than "Gone With the Wind" - and probably more riveting!
I'd love to have one of Hendrik"s DVD's. Please sign me up!
I have been a woodworker for years and am just gaining confidence in using the essential hand tools of the trade, i.e. chisels and planes. I have purchased a couple of excellent Lie-Nielsen planes and am restoring some old Stanley Bedrock and Record planes that were passed down to me from my grandfather. Hope I win this set!
It is like night and day using a sharp plane! It makes all that labor easier on the body!
I'm ready to win one!
Great teacher, I hope I win.
Count me in , Thanks.
I could really use some help! Thanks.
I am new to woodworking, started when my grandfather passed last year and left me his tools. Have been a little intimidated to use his planes.
I would really love that dvd set!
Hendrik's videos are unique and exceptional. These have really taken me to the next level and increase my knowledge 10 fold -- and that's an understatement.
Took a look at the passion for wood website and added it to my desk top. Thank You
Sharpening is always a challenge for me!
I just recently retired and have taken up at interest in learning how to sharpen my tools. I have learned how to sharpen my hand saws and would love to master learning how to sharpen my hand planes and chisels.
Hand planes? Yes!
Looks like a good DVD set.
This would be quite useful to me! Thanks for offering.
Well, that is my birthday... What a gift that would be!
Sharpening always seems to be my Achilles Heel. I keep getting intimidated by it, but know I should just take the plunge and start learning....
Sharpening is such a big hurdle for me. Seems like the only time I have to spend in my shop is after the kids are in bed. Unfortunately, my shop is directly under their bedroom. I'm trying to build my hand tool skills as a way to get more shop time, but it has been a very painful experience. Consequently, I haven't been doing much other than collecting tools. Any material that can help me become consistent at sharpening would be very much appreciate.
Thanks for making this offer!
Gene
Nearly nine hours of sharpening video?! Zzzzzzz. Do it and teach yourself!
I could sure use this!
I've tried to win one of Hendrik’s DVD's several times, both here and on FWW and also other sites, but have yet to win. Maybe I'll win this one.
Pick me please. Thanks
To be Sharpe or not to be Sharp,
that is a big question for us beginners:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the end to suffer
The chips and pits of outrageous bluntness,
Or to take oil stone to a Sea of irons,
And by honing, end them: to shave, to polish, to whet
No more; and by a DVD, to say we smote the
The heart-ache, and the thousand Natural shocks
That hands are heir to? 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To play, to see,
To know the essence of this DVD, perchance to Dream;
(Sorry Will).
Not as sharp as I used to be - sure could use some instruction.
I sure could use this!!
hollowing a vase was so hard when the tool is not sharp and right...
I could really use a copy of this. thanks for to opportunity.

Dude....all my blades are dull because I am a neophyte. Pick me!!!!
Just what Im looking for I was just going to try sharpening some hand plane blades. I could use this.
I'm always finding things buried in old wood I try to reclaim. Needless to say my planes and chisels have edges more along the lines of buck saws. I need to to get better at honing my sharpening skills.
Another nine hour dvd from Mr. Varju? Yes please!
I definitely could use some help with sharpening.
Great to see an 'in depth' article or dvd on sharpening because, IMHO, it is probably the most important skill/ability required for the woodworking craft. I've had my shop for 15 years and it took almost ten of those years for me to refine my own skills to match my personal needs and I still have a lot to learn as my needs & woodworking knowledge broadens, My early fumbling with 'scary sharp' sufficed to introduce me to the importance of sharpness but the path to being adept at 'keeping' all my tools as sharp as need be has been a gamut,,,,through all the machines, guides and abrasives to a point where I rarely have to create an edge on the tools I use most. BUT......now that I have achieved a modicum of skill with blades (chisels, planes, etc)..... I've undertaken the sharpening of saws.....and what a slippery slope this is.
I'll look forward to a review of the DVD as $94 is a little steep for my budget.
Sounds like a useful video. I could use the help.
Sharpening is one of those necessities in order to make your tools perform as they were designed. I certainly can use all the help I can get! Please include me in the drawing.
Gerry
I really need help in the set-up process and this DVD set would be just the ticket to getting that help.
The handplane is one of my favorite tools to reach for after my initial power tool use. What shop doesn't have at least one set of quality chisels. Learning the finer points of sharpening and tuning these essential tools should be a priority for every woodworker. I would watch this DVD many times.
I been using a plane for the last couple of years .I read and ask questions on the use and handling of a plane ,but the most inporant part of the plane is the blade with out it being very shap it will be a paper weight.I am till learning how to master the plane .Would love to see your dvd on planes.
Dennis
I plan to buy more vintage planes in the future and knowing what to look for and how to get the best performance from my planes would be awesome.
Please pick me!
I could really use this to put an edge on my woodworking.
I love hand planes and chisels. This sounds like a great resource; good luck all.
that guy on the cover is dorky looking

I teach high school level woodworking. I start my second year woodworkers with sharpening skills. They have to understand how to sharpen tools and how to care for them if they are going to be successful at woodworking beyond the basic levels. After they go through the sharpening process they have a much greater respect for a quality tool and it shows in how they care for something they sharpened and maintain.
My collection of tools requiring sharpening seems to grow with each tool I acquire. The help would be appreciated.
I am new to sharpening. I can use all the help I can get! Thanks for entering my name in the hat.
Sounds like just what I need to get my planes really sharp, maybe even something like as sharp as the pro's do.
Have been around a while but there is always something to learn so I would apreciate any tips I can find.
I definitely want this DVD set!
Nice!!
I love Varju's work and have a number of his DVD's. I would love fo have this new one.
Even though I have been dabbling in wood work for a few years, I know I need to up my game with hand cutting tools. This DVD would start me off with the proper habits from the start.
I'm ramping up getting back into woodworking and my planes and chisels need cleaning up and sharpening. Since it's been a few years (I've been babysitting my grandson) having this DVD would really be a help in getting those items sharpened. Thanks for entering me in this contest.
It would be great to learn from an experienced woodworker how to efficiently and effectively sharpen planes and chisels!
Just starting to buy and use handplanes. This would be helpful for any woodworker, new or experienced.
there is nothing better than using a freshly sharpened handplane on figured wood.
You can count me in also!
Thank you for including me in the drawing.
Love the feel and results of working with sharp blades, not good at maintaining them...yet!
I'm new at this game, so every article I read and every Visio I watch is a godsend. Looking forward to more . dhdvs
This is Great. Thank You
This DVD set Looks like it will be a good series. Thanks
Would be very interested in learning Mr. Varju's methods.
Yes I do need help with sharpening my blades. They badly need sharpening.
Thanks
Jim
Learning a new sharpening method Hendrik Varju would be great, the DVD makes it easier to learn as you see how he does it exactly.
Thanks
I would love to win this dvd set! As a woodworker I have learned that good sharp tools are a must.
I have read books and magazines about sharpening, but I have never seen it demonstrated. It might help.
I am looking forward to see how Hendrik Varju approaches the business of sharpening plane irons and chisels. It seems that there are almost as many methods as there are wood workers. I would very much like to win this DVD to "hone" my wood working skills!
Cheers Michael Morrill
Maybe this DVD is what I need to improve my sorely lacking sharpening skills.
This is probably my weakest skill-set...I could benefit from some instruction!
I would love to win thids DVD set.
Count me in please, Thanks
Count me in please, Thanks
Such a useful topic! Thanks for having this dvd....
One can never have too much info on this topic!! I'm in!!
G
I have watched a few of his other DVDs that my friends own and winning this would allow me to both start my own collection of Hendrik's DVDs and return the favour with my friends.
This would be great to own for a beginner woodworker like myself that is starting out.
Probably one of the most important and most difficult skills to master for the average woodworker like myself. I am sure any owner of this DVD will forever appreciate the knowledge gleaned from this extensive work. I know I would!
This would be a great addition to any woodworking shop esp. mine. Alway looking for pointers to help improve my work
Would love to win this DVD. Seeing and rewinding to see again can only help me build my sharpening skill. I know my skills need improving.
Would love to win the CD. Thanks.
Thank You for an opportunity to be selected for this DVD. As a collector and user of 18th and 19th century hand planes I would love to have a professional's take on sharpening and caring for these truly beautiful tools. Thanks!
Sharpening is an essential process for enjoyable and safe woodworking and an good demonstrative video would be most helpful. Count me in
Lawrence
I like handplanes
Hendrik's other DVDs are excellent. I imagine this one lives up to the same detail as the others.
This looks like a comprehensive course on sharpening!
I have some chisels that need help!
I have been sharpening handplanes and chisels for 40 years now and I am always open to new methods from an expert such as Hendrik. A few years ago I had the opportunity to talk to Hendrik at a wood show and he was such a down to earth guy. I would love to have the DVD to gain more insight into what he has to say and show me.
Looks and sounds like a wealth of sharpening info. This would look gr8 on my "how-to" library of never-ending books and videos I have been accumulating for many years. Looks like a very educational experience.
I would love to win this. I need all the help I can get with sharpening!
I would love to win this.
How do you enter the give away?
