A reunion is planned for the weekend of Aug 24 and 25, 2013 for all interns, teachers, residents, and employees (and their friends and families) of the Leeds Design Workshops. The festivities will take place in western Massachusetts. On Saturday the 24th there will be a golf outing and a cookout in Haydenville and Florence. Then on Sunday the 25th a brunch and slideshow in Northampton will be followed by shop tours in Easthampton. For all the details see the Leeds Reunion 2013 website/blog.
Leeds Design Workshops was opened at One Cottage Street in Easthampton, Mass in 1977 by David Powell and John Tierney as a furniture school and furniture making business and continued teaching woodworkers until it closed in 1989. Powell was trained in the Edward Barnsley workshop in England and studied under the likes of David Pye while at the Royal College of Art. Soon after coming to the the United States he and Tierney opend the school. The legacy of Leeds Design Workshops continues today with a wide array of graduates continuing in the woodworking field.
