Makita - Makita VC4710 Shop Vacuum
Has a variable-speed feature, a tool-actuated outlet, a 24-ft. cord, and easy-rolling castersPowerful Vac is Clean and Quiet
Makita’s new shop vacuum is a powerful yet quiet machine, with state-of-the-art filters available. To test it, I repeated the procedures used for a shop-vac review we did in FWW #223 (“Tool Test: HEPA Shop Vacuums“), using both the standard filters and optional HEPA filters. After removing the included bags and seasoning the filters, the working airflow at the end of the 16-ft., 1-1⁄2-in.-dia. hose measured 70 cfm (with the HEPA filters), second only to the Bosch Airsweep in that review and just ahead of the more recently reviewed DeWalt DWV012 (“DeWalt DVW012“, FWW #232). With the standard filters, the flow was 5% higher.
The 10-gal. usable volume is about average. But some great features make this vacuum stand out. The automatic filter cleaning system kept the flow up as the container filled, and restored the original performance after emptying the container, with both the HEPA and standard filters. The vac has a variable-speed feature that lets you dial in the suction power, a tool-actuated outlet, a 24-ft. cord, and easy-rolling casters. Plus, at 72 db., this was one of the quietest units we have tested.
The Makita ranks close in performance to the Bosch Airsweep and DeWalt DWV012. But because HEPA filters are not standard, it’s hard for the Makita to move ahead of the DeWalt as a Best Value candidate.
