This video makes me want to learn more about the art that is being depicted here. There is a lot to like in these two minutes.
I like the craftsman’s stance, his bench-hook, his clamping system. I like the variety of designs he’s able to create with this technique. Most of all, though, I liked the surprise I felt when I realized he had something bigger in mind than decorative bandings.
The finished piece might seem visually busy to some, but after seeing just a sliver of the work involved I am thoroughly impressed. Check it out.

Holy cow, how thin is that veneer shaving. It's like paper. I guess you don't sand that! Absolutely incredible. My respect for the Japanese form and style has increased even more.
This is a fine example of why hand woodworking with sharp tools by master craftsman will never be replaced.
