Back by popular demand! Finishing Wood from Fine Woodworking magazine is a collection of articles that will help with all your finishing projects. The magazine includes articles that cover the basics such as prep work, sanding between coats, and wax topcoats. It also includes sections on clear finishes, coloring wood, and spray finishing. Lastly, the magazine has a section with a few articles from our sister publication, Fine Homebuilding, providing information on painted finishes, staining trim and millwork, and finishes for interior doors.
Originally published in 2010, Finishing Wood is now available again with an additional article about shellac. One reader says it best: “[Finishing Wood] covered all facets of wood finishing and was authored by the finest finishers in the field. There is a wealth of information in this magazine.”
Professional finisher Peter Gedrys, featured on the cover of the magazine, is personalizing the copies of the magazines won by realreal and woodchip20 with autographed copies. The lucky winners were choosen at random.

The beautiful finish shown on the door in the picture on the cover Finishing Wood reminds me of the warmth of a summer sunset in Maryland. I look forward to reading this book so I can also learn to finish wood to highlight its warmth and beauty.

could be useful :)

Thanks for the contest. If there's one area I can always use some tips to improve my skills, it is finishing.
just what I need!
I have yet to find a finishing technique that I like.
I want one that is foolproof, easy to clean up after, allows me to take my time when putting it on, very durable, easily repairable, and doesn't look like poly when I'm done.
I also want one that doesn't set off my explosive gasses alarm like shellac does.
I suppose it is too much to ask for, but it would be nice if I found that solution in this book.
Looks like a valuable addition to my FWW library.
Much needed information!
I am sure it will be a great Fine Woodworking essential book.
Glad to see this updated information. Finishing chemistry really seems to change fast.
This would be a great addition to my library
I would love to have this book as I have been experimenting with shellac and danish oil finishes recently but have lots to learn.
My ultimate chance to get a grip on one of the most challenging tasks in woodworking.
A useful resource that can make an ordinary project excel
Looking forward to learning more.
Just what the doctor ordered.
Solutions to probably the most troubling tasks in woodworking
Wow....an anthology of finishing techniques from a great publication. I'll purchase one for myself and hope to win so i can give it as a gift to one of my grandchildren.
I would like to know about the difference of finishing techniques between Asia and West .
Always more to learn about finishing.
Just in time. My 'BunkBed ' project should be ready for finishing soon.
I have "Painting and Finishing" from Taunton's. My husband is a custom carpenter and says Fine Woodworking contains the best knowledge.
I love finishing different species of woods. Each has their own character that shines through with the perfect finish.
I am thirsty for more knowledge, and "Finishing Wood" is on my list of information to learn.
I'm sure this "wood" be useful.
The compilation of articles is very valuable as the in-depth discussion and approach differences of authors can trigger understanding not gained reading the individual pieces in isolation. Thanks for the contest!
Sure. I'd be interested
Without the "finish" the project isn't finished.

Count me in!!
I could use that for a project I'm working on right now. Count me in!
Since it is not my cut of tea...
I would like to enhance my finishing skills, since I puts so much time and effort into building and assembly.
For myself finishing is the most frustrating part of a project. I'm sure this book would be a welcome addition to my library.
Would love to have it in my collection!
Finishing is always my downfall. I'd live to use something besides polyurethane to finish my projects.
I must not keep finishing the same way. Over and over again I stay with comfortable instead of using the correct finish for the piece. I could really use the help.
If there is any area of woodworking that confusion lives it is wood finishing. I have seen so many people in this profession who think they know what they are doing but really don't. Much of what people think they know out there about finishing has been passed down from people who don't understand it themselves. This leads to having to unlearn what we think we know to adapt to the correct processes of finishing. Fine Woodworking is a great place to find the correct information to lead you down the path of success to wood finishing.
Love Finishing...just no good at it!
This could be a very useful resource, comparing various finishing processes and techniques. I use several methods and materials, depending on the wood in use and the purpose of the project. I am sure this would be a good addition to my library, and will get lots of use.
l always enjoy finishing a project - especially when I have expert advise on how to do it.
You only have to botch a finishing job once to know why this book is so popular!
I like building pieces from figured stock and always try to ensure those features show prominently. Selecting a finish that keeps to that end is my downfall. I typically opt for a clear finish of poly, oil or untreated. As a novice woodworker, I am looking for guidance and a good book would be just great.
Most definitely! While joinery and assembly are my most favorite aspects of executing a project, the final finishing can be intimidating. That's why I'd like to own a copy of Wood Finishing. I would produce more furniture projects if it weren't for the inevitable moment that arrives near its conclusion where it's- you guessed it! Finish Time and the challenges really begin.
The answer to the woodworkers enigma.
Anything that helps me to improve must be worth its weight in gold!
I'd love to learn about some non-toxic finishes which can look as good as the stuff I hate to accumulate around the shop.
Perfect, I'm building a blanket chest and will need some help finishing it.
finishing is one of the things that I have so much more to learn about
This magazine seems to have all the processes that everyone needs in order to achieve a beautiful finish.
Great. Sign me up.
I have successfully used a number of articles on finishing over the years from Fine Woodworking
Excellent, sign me up!
Me!
Tending to be a perfectionist when it comes to my projects, I could use the knowledge of experts on how to create the best finishes, to be satisfied with my completed projects.
Of all the things I still need to learn about woodworking, finishing- and finishing well- is the next priority on my list. Otherwise I'll have a shop full of projects that will never see the light of day so, fingers crossed.

All wood is beautiful. The finish enhances the beauty of nature. I want my projects to be as good as they can be.
All wood is beautiful. The finish enhances the beauty of nature. I want my projects to be as good as they can be.
I would really like to win this book!!
I am a novice wood turner and am trying to learn all I can about PROPER finishing.
I also have a 12 year old solid wood exterior door that has received a lot of sun/UV damage and has lost much of its original beauty. I want to restore it and also protect it from future damage as much as possible.
The finish makes the difference in so many projects and it can always be better. I would like to learn all the techniques and have it in a book form so I can read it in my shop!
I sure would like to get one of these.
No matter how muich craftsmanship that goes into making a piece of furnitire or the quality of the materials used, the finsh will always be 'the icing on the cake'. Anything other and it's all in vain.

I know just enough about finishing to know that I need this book!
Surprised that shellac wasn't covered in prior edition, but look forward to reading that article.
The Finishing magazine looks awesome. Finishing is what anybody sees first so if the sanding and other prep along with staining etc is done correctly, your piece will look great.
I've been working on old wooden boats for forty years, and the only type of finishes I really know are oil-based paints and marine varnish. I have no idea how many gallons of varnish I've been through during that time, but it would float a small boat. But finishing for woodwork, and now wood turning since I've recently bought and restored an old 70's-era Craftsman wood lathe, is a mystery to me. It's time I educated myself.

I've gotten so fed up with finishing that I've switched almost exclusively to wipe on polys for ease. Problem is it isn't as durable so the stuff I made for the kids may need help down the road. Interested to see if this can get me back into using other finishes again.
I will be making new cabinets in the near future for our kitchen. It would be
Nice to have the book to help me decide on how to choose which way I would go about finishing the cabinets.
What a nice looking issue; I surely could use it!
Always have trouble choosing the finish for my projects, this could be a very good addition to my wood bible collection, you can never have to much nowledge!
I don't have anything clever to say now, but I probably will after I read the book.
This is a book I have always wanted but living at the bottom of the world makes the postage prohibitive so a free copy would fill an ancient void.
I guess living in the UK may create a bit of a problem if I win the book because of the postage, but here's hoping and fingers crossed! I am three quarters through making english beech bedroom furniture (2 wardrobes, a bridging hit and 2 dressing tables) so the book would be put to good use!
Looks like a good reference.
Nice to have all those good articles in one place.
There is always something new to learn in finishing techniques.
Need this one for sure!
Excellent reference
A wealth of information, for the seasoned finisher to the beginner, a reference we all could use. Thank you and good luck to all.

Spending hours on a project to not finish it to its full potential is a waste of material and time. A book telling the prper way to finish would be an excellent addition to the workshop library
Great resource.
I really need this book!
I just finished a project and had to get help. I still need a lot of help to get the finish I want. The way the finishing Co. are changing the finishes is making it harder and harder to get a great finish. I want all the help I can get, and this book should help get better finishes on my projects.
Thank You
Please end my finishing nightmares. I'm as deserving as can be.
Looking for simple, fool-proof methods and techniques. This book should have them!!
Finishing is the one area I need the most help with. Please consider me a worthy and grateful recipient.
Nice book. Would like to have it sent to Sweden
Need help with finishing.
Finishing, not my strongest subject.
Staining, shellacking, pigments, dyes.
Padding lacquers, varnish too!
Oh, to have this book for answers.
Regards,
Bill
Being a shop teacher, I'm sure that both myself and my students would benefit from the invaluable information that this book contains.
Thanks so much,
marc
Looks like another great publication!
Wish it were in my library.
I can use some help getting over the 'finish" line.
Finishing has almost always scared me. Would be nice to get past that fear.
please?
I never win anything! It would be nice to start Finishing Wood.
I do a lot of refinishing.Would love this book to learn how to do it right.
I love woodworking. I am a very experienced and I think, a damn good woodworker. I don't like finishing so much, as I am not that accomplished at it. I tell kids ' you love the things you can do well'. I need to get better at finishing. So I guess I should have this book. Mike Regis
I got started refinishing old family furniture for my mom... So much has changed and I'm using finishes that I prefer over the poly she made me use... I could sure use a refresher course on the subject and this issue would fit the bill... besides it comes from Fine Woodworking...
This would be a valuable book to have on my bookshelf. I would also need the sister book "Patience for Woodworkers".
I can put this to use right away, sign me up.
I'm in favor of finishing.
This would be a great magazine to have.
I'm in.

What?! I need to finish a project? Please, I need this book, just ask my wife...
Too many projects to be doing if work just wasn't in the way.
I have several Fine Woodworking books, this would make a great addition to my collection.
I'm 77 years old and still can't figure out how to finish my projects to my satisfaction. Please help me!!!
Please.
Looks like another masterpiece to help turn our work into masterpieces. Keep up the good work!
would love this
Like many, I change beautiful unfinished pieces into just nicely, but not beautifully finished pieces. Each tip to eliminate a finishing problem, brings my project closer to the perfection woodworkers strive for..
what a book!
I'll take one please.
Yet another fine offering from Fine Woodworking.
Yes, I would this book.
About to start the finishing process on my latest project.
Finishing causes me great anxiety.
Finishing has yet to exceed my expectations.
Finishing always room for improvement. Count me in, would love to improve my skills.
I am always looking for more efficient ways to finish projects.
Invested 4 months in designing and building a handsome armoire for my daughter, then I screwed it up with a crummy looking finish.. Doesn't look too bad though the darkened part of her home..
I used to stain pieces and was never happy with the color, so now I use better looking timber and simply use a mineral oil and/or polyurethane and keep the natural colors
I really need this!!
Yes please
Finishing is the one area of woodworking I feel I can never quite feel like I have mastered. If I screw up, this is where it will happen.
Sign me up. Thanks!
Will be very useful
This book would be a help. I always feel that I cnstruct a nice piece and then ruin it with the finish.
This would a most appreciated addition to my woodworking bookshelf.
We need help down here in Texas with our finishing techniques. Maybe this book would give us some ideas other than a can of poly.
Although i prefer oil finishes for most projects because they leave the wood surface with a sensuous feel I recognize that there are situations where items are exposed to water, alcohol, and other vicissitudes that require a more impermeable finish. But I still don't like the plastic feel....
I just recently started using dyes and a sprayer to apply water bourne top coats. I would still find a use for this book
Finishining? I thought I was done with the last drywall screw. Huh, who knew?
