The Creative Woodturner: Inspiring Ideas and Projects for Developing Your Own Woodturning Style by Terry Martin
Linden Publishing, 2014.
$24.95; 144 pp.
We have a winner!
Terry Martin is an established woodturner and has written a new book, The Creative Woodturner. This isn’t your typical “how-to” book. It isn’t going to teach you about tools and techniques – you probably already know that stuff. But it is going to show you how to develop your artistic style.
The 1st chapter, “Thinking About Turning” is filled with poignant quotes from the likes of Benjamin Franklin and Pablo Picasso and they get you thinking. It also provides insightful observations from Martin’s past and from other artists that will help you to think and see things differently. Then, 16 inspiring projects show you how Martin’s creative process works. And at the same time you will learn some useful turning tips.
The Creative Woodturner “will teach you to think and see differently so your time at the lathe is not spent imitating someone else, but creating the original ideas that will set you apart.”

Sounds like a great book.
Sounds like fun, guess I better go sharpen so skews!
Wow! Looks fantastic
To many woodworkers think they´re writers or movie makers
They make videos and write books which often stop far short of there intended purpose I have no knowledge of this chap, but the devil is in the detail, as they say I hope it does well.
and inspires people professional and armatures alike to greater heights in our craft.
One can always learn more and this looks like a great opportunity to learn more.
What is going on with your website? Over the past few weeks, it has been slower than dial-up. It took over 15 min to get from your e-zine to this page to post a comment. I have a 4G internet setup and Tauton is the only website that is even remotely this slow. I would love to have this book as I am just getting started in woodturning.
Yes please.
Looks terrific. just getting into turning again, the book would be very useful.
Cant wait!! If its anything like his previous articles it should be well worthwhile..roll on October if I have to wait that long.
Definitely! Time to move on.
This book explores the subject of my current project: adding decorative embellishments to my turned bowls!

Only if I could have that much inspiration when standing at the lathe with a fresh blank turning, before I lay a tool on it.
That would be a great blessing .
Looks great.
We've been learning for th epast year, just how to shape a tree trunks. Imitating other wood turners is good for starting, but we hope to learn how to create something individual. This book may be the answer to that quest.
I'm with Artex, maybe this time...

It's amazing how far turning has progressed since the days when a simple bowl was the high point of the craft.
Great looking book. Count me in.
This looks like the type of book that would have one thinking out side the box, even if one is making a small box. Yes, the comment about the Fine Wood Working web site being slow is accurate, it's the slowest site I log on to.
A book to help inspire would be great!
Thank you for this opportunity
Looks like a wonderful read. Just what I need to get myself motivated.

Hi guys! (and gals if appropriate)
Thanks for sharing a glimpse of the new book. Judging from the cover (pun intended) it is yet another Taunton Press Masterpiece. The thing I love about the Taunton Press books is the fresh approach to methods, techniques, and approaches to wood working from function and form points of view. Thanks for being there!
Best regards,
Tim Pierce

I would really enjoy this book. I won a Jet lathe last year and since I had to move a ton of stuff into the garage also, I am still cleaning out and selling and arranging the stuff from the garage so I can setup a small shop for my son and I. This book would be great towards me learning how to work with and designing things in our shop and especially on the lathe.

Let's hope somebody from Missoula wins it --- but not Matt! :-)
Sweet!
I'm a teacher who likes my students to think outside the circle of the lathe. I have, in the past, drawn inspiration from the work of Stephen Hogbin. This book appears to include similar explorations so I'd love to have it as a reference. Thanks for the competition. I've never posted a comment before.

I may be new to woodturning, but I've always been one to look at things differently and don't do things the simple way. I think this book would be a true source of inspiration. I would truly cherish the opportunity to have this book in my library.
