In my last video, I showed the piece-by-piece construction, design, and assembly of the Greene & Greene Bedside Table. In this video, I show the making of the ebony plugs that cover wood screws and tenon pegs. My process makes frequent use of the Scale Tool, but also involves Follow Me, Arc, and Push/Pull Tools. As Dave and I have pointed out often, it is usually more efficient to make new components in the context of the adjacent components in the assembled piece. That way you minimize having to place guidelines and draw to specific length. I follow that practice here in making the ebony plugs.
Here is the final version of the table with all the ebony plugs in place.
I’ve Scaled up the 1/4 x 1/4 plug by a factor of 100. I did the scaling while the plug was in its normal place on the table leg. There was no need to move it away or copy it away from the Table. Also, the Arc Tool creates a smooth shape for the top of the plug using the Follow Me Tool.
The 1/4 x 1/4 plug is used to make the larger plugs in the Breadboard ends. Again the Scale Tool is used to quickly enlarge the component to exactly fit the Breadboard recess.
The Breadboard has two sizes for the plugs. I use the short one to make the longer one in the center of the breadboard.
Here is a closer view of the plugs.
And finally working these on the actual piece in the shop.
