Hearne Hardwoods in Pennsylvania recently held an Open House and Student Scholarship Competition. They invited local high school and college students to submit an original piece of work for display over the weekend and then they were judged by 3 well regarded local woodworkers.
Current and past students from the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology almost swept the competition by winning 4 of the 5 prizes with Bucks County Community College winning one. The winners were:
Matt Miller (TSCT-2014) – first place – $1500, Pennsylvania Spice chest
Collin Henrie (TSCT-2015) – second place – $1000, Curly Maple Spice chest
John Goodwin (TSCT-2014) – third place – $500, New England Block Front Chest of Drawers
Wyatt McQueen (TSCT-2011) – People’s Choice – $500 Hearne Hardwoods gift certificate,
Boston Bombe Chest
Ryan Burkholder (BCCC) – honorable mention for original design – $200, Dressing Table
Congratulations to the winners. All the work submitted was top notch.
Fine Woodworking contributing editor Steve Latta is on the faculty at Thaddeus Stevens College so I feel a little “kinship” to these young men. They did a great job.
The Open House sounds like it was a great time. Hearne Hardwoods had tool vendors demonstrating their wares, representatives from the Wharton Esherick Museum were on hand, and lectures and demonstrations were ongoing by the likes of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers and Maker USA. They even raised over $4100 for Habitat for Humanity by holding raffles and log auctions throughout the weekend.
