STL 73: Sticking it to the EU
This week on Shop Talk Live, fresh on the heels of out last episode’s investigation into tablesaw injury litigation, we come to find out that some folks still like to rip without a fence. Ugh! Plus, your woodworking questions answered, and the gang’s ruminations on whether or not you can outfit a European tablesaw with a dado set.
Every two weeks, a team of Fine Woodworking staffers answer questions from readers on Shop Talk Live, Fine Woodworking’s biweekly podcast. Send your woodworking questions to [email protected] for consideration in the regular broadcast!

Sir,
Re: STL 73: Sticking it to the EU
Why, in my view, such an unnecessarily aggressive and derogatory headline? The EU is certainly not responsible for the attitude of machinery manufacturers on your side of the ocean. If EU standards were to be adopted in your country ~ people would benefit. Please, would you therefore consider moderating the base tribalism so prevalent these days in all spheres of life (and death for so many) We are not all so blessed with hands and fingers that we can be so cavalier or so Health & Safety phobic.
How would your 'fine' and 'responsible' 'journalist' 'editors' have reacted if you had received something from me along the lines of say, Sticking TTIP to the Yanks... or Yanks go home... or Global Military Industrial Journalistic Kaputalism Kills??? USA does not yet run the entire world although clearly it would like to.
siobhanws, when we run the world we will come looking for you, we know where you live. We will force you to use table saws, in fact all machines, without safety equipment while you are singing "we love you yanks". Are you jealous you can't rule the world or maybe you don't have a sense of humor.
Have a nice day (WE ARE COMING)
Dear siobhanws,
The headline that upset you so is what we in the USA call "tongue-in-cheek" humor. The concept is that you say something so ridiculous that people know not to take it seriously. We have all been warned that Germans have no sense of humor so I assume you may be Deutsch. Perhaps Fine Woodworking should take the delicate sensibilities of their off-shore (former?) fans before posting future headlines that attempt any humor that will be inscrutable to the rest of the world and put warning labels along side such titles. WARNING: This comment also contains (an attempt at) tongue in cheek humor.
Yeah, you were buzzing about in your bottle a bit in this show.
To the guy having trouble with dado blades: I've fit straight edge shaper cutters on my table saw and had good results (grooves, rabets, finger joints...).
It's an insoluble problem and heck knows I've tried. On most European saws the slot in the table itself is only wide enough to accept a single blade but the main issue is that, since 2004, saws have to be braked (in Europe) and there's mechanism for doing that with a dado set. Presumably the chippers would just freewheel to stop and that's not acceptable to the Euro-goons.
For anyone who's interested (and I did consider it) importing a Bosch GTS1031 from the US and buying a transformer for the different voltage works about £50 ($80) cheaper than buying the equivalent in the UK (even after you've been robbed by UPS. They DO know how to maximise an opportunity). I decided against it on the grounds that I couldn't be sure it would be allowed through customs. The extra lump of the step-up transformer to deal with was also not very attractive.
Matt - Nice try on the "Toto-true" comment, but you should have said "Asia-true" cause it was the progressive rock band Asia that recoded "Heat of the Moment". Just saying ...
I thought European dado blades are just expensive,
see an example of dado blades on a Felder here http://youtu.be/06PzXIqzQXM
