I come from a boat building family and helped my grandfather build a canoe when I was a boy. These might just inspire me to give it another go.
my brother in law introduced me to the sweet world of strip plank canoes. This was the book he let me borrow and I'd love to have my own copy so that i could also pass on this beautiful art. We live 500 miles apart so i can"t borrow his. Doubt I'll wait to win.
I love woodworking and canoeing so this would certainly be the next logical step.
I just started woodworking. My goal is to build a sailboat but a canoe is a more realistic starting point.
Looking forward to reading these books and being inspired!
Building a canoe would be a great project.
Looks like a great book.
Building boats is what I'm working towards with my skills and this would be wonderful for getting my feet wet. (Pun intended)
These books would provide a great opportunity for my dad, brothers, and myself to dig into a fun canoe building experience (not to mention endless hours on the lake).
I could use this book, Its what we need in this house to kick start out spring after this weather, We would greatly like a shot at the building a canoe....
Throw my name in the hat!!!!!
I would love to take my better half out on a lake in a canoe that I built with my own hands.
I always Wanted a wooden canoe, now I can build one!
I could use this book
A canoe has been on my list for a long time. Would love to own this book!
It might be time to build another boat
Float the winning books my way
I have contemplated building a strip canoe for years. This could be the kick in the butt I need to get going!
I know that building a canoe would be a multi year pain for my wife. You know, the cedar elephant in the shop; that one project which is all consuming and never quite perfect. I don't care, I would love to build one, and at the very least, the techniques and skills from these books could be applied 100 different ways.
I have a little boy who's favorite thing to do is for a canoe ride. Building our own canoe is on my short list.
I have a little boy who's favorite thing to do is go for canoe rides. Building our own canoe is on my short list.
Why not!
I just sold my 17 ft. Grumman aluminum canoe because as I kept growing older, due to no fault of my own, the darn canoe seemed to keep on gaining weight! My favorite lake must have had "heavy" water, I guess. I saw a wooden canoe that purported to weigh a fraction of my Grumman "whale" up on a wall in a flyfishing store, and I thought, "Now, that's what these 'ol bones need!" But buying that beauty was out of my reach (financially, not height). Now that I'm retired I've got the time to build one. Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead...in a wooden canoe, that is!
I am actually wanting to build a stand up paddleboard this summer. A canoe was next on the agenda. Great timing!
My last few ambitioous projects were building acoustic guitars and ukuleles. Building a strip canoe would be right up my alley!
What an awesome book, would love to build one.
I have thought about building a canoe for several years now, time to do it is now!
A beautiful wooden canoe skimming by is a site to behold. I've always wanted to build one. Let's do this!
Looks like a beautiful book. Id love to build one day.
What a great book to add to my growing wooworking book collection. Building a canoe is on my bucket list.
These look like great books for anyone, in woodworking, who loves the water and water sports. I can't wait to get a look.
In our childhood friends and myself, built our canoes out of folded sheets of corrugated iron, very basic but worked a treat for us. No such thing as a beautiful wooden canoe, not even the injection moulded designs of today. I must admit, I have dreamt of building a timber canoe for many years, the time is right now as I am retired and the thought of my children and grand children, having the same thrills and joy of a days on the water. Mostly it would be the delight of admiring the beauty of handcrafted wooden canoe, who knows it may lead to the construction of a clinker built, row boat.
I have been wanting to build a canoe for several years. This book would be very helpful.
My brother in law built several cedar strip canoes back in the '70's. I went with him to the BWCA and they worked like a dream. These canoes are both beautiful and functional. I have wanted to build one for years and the books are an inspiration.
I keep thinking about building a boat, might be best to start with the paddles!
This is one of those projects that looks daunting at the start but is really a lot of fun and rewarding for any avid woodworker that enjoys being on the water as well. I am in that category and look forward to reading these books.
I've long thought that a canoe and paddle should be my next project. In Minnesota, we have a lot of lakes on which to test a canoe.
Many years ago, before the Internet, I bought a book and built a 16 foot stripper canoe. The end result was great but the journey was arduous: the book's instructions were ambiguous for an amateur. I decided to rewrite that book. However, the re-write never happened.
Years later, I bought CanoeCraft, built a second 16 foot canoe and realized that CanoeCraft is the book I had contemplated. Both canoes weigh less than 50 pounds each. (I sold each mold for $100. The buyers each built one canoe and sold the mold for $150.)
I love fishing from a canoe and a wood one would be amazing. Can you canoe? :)
For years I have wanted to build a strip laminated kayak. Lately, my thoughts have turned to a smaller one person canoe. I have restored a couple of old canoes and the time seems right to build one myself.
Always dreamed of making my own canoe.
I guess I'd better make my new shop long enough and skinny enough to build a canoe....
I'd love to build one!
I would just love this book
I have an Old Town 20 foot 1950 model in restoration. Need to make paddles to go with it.
Here is my entry into the random drawing.
I studied this book years ago but ended up making a Kevlar canoe--a fine project in its own right, but being a woodworker at heart, I'd love to make a strip canoe! Send the books my way!
Would love this book.
It would be fantastic to own such a beauty. Even more fantastic to build such a beauty. I'm in.
There is nothing quite a satisfying as paddling a beautiful wooden boat, especially one that you built.
i have a friend whose dream it would be to build his own boat. i would love to be able to offer these to him.
thank you
I've borrowed the paddle making book from a friend, it's a great resource, I'm in the process of making one now. It would be great to add both books to my library.
Love it!
I just finished building a strip canoe and paddles. This book would have been a great reference for the project.
I've always admired strip cedar canoes. A good book for guidance should help motivate one to seriously consider building one.
I watched my Dad build a wooden motor boat when I was very young which resulted in my always wanting to build a wooden canoe. I can't think of anything that would provide a better challenge and greater pleasure.
This is one of my ultimate projects for me. Loved the craftsmanship that goes into these can't wait to start one in the near future.
Like other woodworkers I have always had dreams of "special" projects. The two most dominant dreams are building a woods trip canoe and building a Windsor chair. Both take time and patience but yield long term appreciation of the skills needed and the chance to float free on your own handcrafting.
A canoe has been on my to build list for a number of years, I was waiting until I developed my woodworking skills a little more and that time has arrived. This giveaway is very timely.
This would be a great father sons project. I will have to check out these books Canoecraft by Ted Moores and Canoe Paddles, by Graham Warren and David Gidmark.
You just added another item on my bucket-list.
Thanks.
Amazing coincidence - Today I am applying the final coat of varnish on my rebuilt cedar strip canoe....all work was done following the earlier edition of this book borrowed from my local library. I would love to own it and can certainly recommend it to anyone with an interest in canoe repair or construction.
I consider the canoe & paddle to be works of art. I know they belong in the water, but if I actually had the wall space, I'd hang it up to admire.
The reason I love wood working is because you are using a product that is produced naturally from nature that in and of itself truly a majestic thing. When you think about a single seed growing into a mature tree and what it offers over its lifetime from shelter in many forms to the oxygen that we breath. I have always wanted to build a wooden canoe, what better way to for a tree to keep giving than to offer its assistance in getting you out onto a mountain lake far from population to enjoy a day, or many, in nature where the story began.
As a child, my father built a small wooden remote controlled boat. I remember telling him that it would be fun to build a boat that we could use. His reply was that a Canoe would be the most useful. I replied that we should build it.
Now; many, many years later I've been discussing this Wooden Canoe project with my daughters. This is something we're very interested in.
I've always wanted to build one of these. Now I just to clear some space in the shop!
I own both the 1st and 2nd edition of this book and they are really well written with lots of information from A to Z, for pros and amateurs alike. They are my prized possession.
I found Mr.Moore's first book splendidly easy to use in canoe building.
He does a fine job of explaining the topics and steps needed so a beginning builder can enjoy creating a canoe using his book.
I look forward to the updated edition.!
This reminds me of the gorgeous wooden boats of the past. There is nothing more beautiful than a well kept/preserved wooden boat cruising the waters.
As a canker of moderate skill and long experience, I am ready to make one. I use a Bell tripper noe and have thought about making twin solos for my wife and I. This is the place to start!
Looks like great resource to get ready for a season on the water.
I have been planning to build a canoe this year and this looks like a great resource.
I've been thinking of building a canoe to hone all the wood working skills I'm learning form great sites like Fine Woodworking. We have many lakes nearby and not a better project to work on with my grandson then take him out fishing in the canoe we built. If I win the book I'll post lots of pictures! Thanks!!
OK, all you guys that said any variation of, "Gee I always wanted to build a canoe". get off your arse, don't wait to win these books!!!!!!!!! In the very early 60's I was stationed at Loring AFB -Limestone, Maine- The land of 7 months of winter, 4 months poor skiing and 5 months of great fly fishing.... During that 7 months of winter, I and a Warrant Officer fishing buddy decided that his Grumman was a whale, and I needed a canoe. So my landlord told use we could use his potato barn to build it in..... We couldn't find any clear red cedar, but did find a lot of clear spruce.... The landlord had a 21' Old Town wood/canvas guide canoe that we used for a pattern and measurements. We bought the canvas, the white lead used to fill the pores of the canvas and the Old Town traditional GREEN canoe paint from Old Town.... We virtually wore out a saw blade resawing that spruce into 1/8" x 2" planks and used 4" stove pipe to make a steam box to bend the ribs..... Lots of hand scraping, clinching of copper nails and hard labor rubbing that white lead into the canvas so that when we put the Old Town green paint on, it looked like today's molded plastic.... Now in Maine, fishing season started in April, but the stream, river or lake had to be ice free at the banks or shore... My canoe was ready for the water, but ice free water on the Aroostook River was still 20 feet away... After a 50 ft pine tree fell and broke the ice, we launched and celebrated by catching 2 16" Brook Trout. The game warden come by and wanted know where we put in, and I told him "upstream where the tree had fallen on the ice...." He said, oh where the beavers chopped the tree down?" " Yep, that's the one".. He told us to have a good day and went on his way.......... A bit of advice- surrender wading and fishing time now and build the canoe NOW- you aren't getting any younger.... You might not regret not marrying your high school sweet heart, but you will regret not building your canoe before you got too old to use it..... Time to make sawdust and shavings.... BTW, that canoe now floats on the lakes around Lakeland, Fla.
I live near a river which might still be there when I finished building a canoe
This book could help me to finish decades earlier!
I'd love to replace my plastic Coleman canoe, the one with the gunwales so far apart you can barely reach them at the same time, with one I made. And then after that, a kayak!
I would like a copy of the book
This is just the inspiration I need to start a project that's been on the back burner for decades. Thanks, FWW!!
Might as well try my luck!
I would love to have these books, and my wife would love it if I built us a canoe and paddles!
This would work to combine my two hobbies, kayaking and woodworking. I would be able to build my own canoe and paddle and then show them off to my friends on the water.
I've torn up more canoes than I care to admit. Ripped canvas, cracked rips, torn aluminum, hogged royalex. It's time to start paying back the canoe population.........

A canoe would be a great project!
I would enjoy this books.
Would be a great challenge and a wonderful project; would love the opportunity to build the cacoe.
Francis X. Blais, DO, FACOI
I need to build a canoe to float the Buffalo National Scenic River!
I began repairing old canoes with the Boy Scouts in the late 1950s. I would love to get back into building and repairing canoes now that I'm retired.
What a great set of books. I'd love to learn the craft.
Have always had an interest in these subjects. They are Truly works of Art.
It looks like a beautiful book on a fabulous topic. Too much of our world is extruded or commercially fabricated. AS I begin my pilgrimage into more serious woodworking, what a wonderful project to embark on. Are you sure you can't give away a bunch of these tomes?
This would be a perfect project for me and my daughter to work on together.
I live in Arizona--why wouldn't I want to build a canoe?
My bucket list has build a canoe and build a kayak on it.
This book would help me achieve that! Thanks for holding the giveaway.
I want to build a cedar strip canoe with my family. It would be a great project for us. we could use it on the duck river and a near by lake. plus it would keep this old man out of the hen house.
A canoe is on my list of projects to tackle someday.
Looks like a nice book.
Nice pair of books. I'll ask my library to buy them.
Hey, I wouldn't mind these books 'tall!
I've checked this book out of the library a number of times because been wanting to build a boat for some time. I'd love to win a copy of this book.
My son and I just started making a cedar strip canoe. Would be really interested in reading more about the process and perhaps even making our own paddles.
always wanted to build a canoe
This is a project high on my wish list. I am just finishing up redoing my shop and would love to have this be the first project !
My wife is Native American & her tribe is known for beautiful birchbark canoes. I would like to honor her ancestry by building her a canoe myself, although it wouldn't be birchbark. Thanks for the opportunity.
My son used this book to build a canoe for a senior HS project. I'd like a copy to join him by making my own.
I purchased copper nails and roves to make shaker boxes, why not expand my project list with a canoe besides we have the gorgeous Skokie Lagoons which canooers (sp?) ply their skills all summer long. I can be one of the them!
i do simple cabinetry and carpentry, and always wanted to build wood personal watercraft such as dinghys, canoes and kayaks, and i believe these books will help me do that with less sweat.
I have a copy of the original and I have it still awaiting a build - would love to have the update as there i.e. no finer book to inspire anyone to build a canoe. I WILL build one ........... I have promised myself .......... perhaps the update will be the final incentive to get it done !
I don't care if I don't win a copy cos I have to have the update and will buy it anyway.
Any canoe builder can not build a canoe without reading this book first!
I've been paddling since I was almost big enough to reach over the gunwales. As I remember, finding a short enough paddle was a real problem. Tipping was not considered to be a serious problem.
I have been threatening to build a canoe for decades - perhaps the time has finally arrived!
Can I Canoe too?
Building a woodstrip canoe is a project that I have wanted to do for a very long time. Winning this book will undoubtedly get me started on it at last!
I have always admired the long, sleek lines and the beautiful contrasting woods of a wood strip canoe.
Birch trees will love this book
I have just retired, and have the time required to build a canoe. This is a project I have dreamed about completing for many years.
Imagine the pride of paddling a canoe you built.
I've been interested in building a woodstrip canoe for a long time. It would be great to win these books.
Always wanted to build a canoe.
ive built kayaks but not a canoe . this is like building in the big leagues(not 20 thousand under the sea) har har.
like it. would love to build one.
I have over 1500 bd/ft of cedar,--- all I need now is the book to show me how to make the canoe!
Something I've wanted to try since a kid.
always wanted to make a canoe, this would be the inspiration to do so.
My granddad built his own boat and I was lucky enough to row in it before it was donated to a museum. I would like to build a canoe someday!!!
A canoe sounds like a great idea for my next project, a book or two on the subject would sure help.
I've always loved strip canoes and winning the books would go a long way to moving me to building one.
I'm planning my next workshop space around boat building and am excited to learn more.
Canoes are so fascinating. It would be a great experience to build one )that floats) then take a cruise in it. Please put my name in the box.
I made 2 canoe 15 years ago with my brother(1 for him and the other for me) I still have mine but it needs refinishing. the original finish was fiberglass. would love the have these books !!
tks for the opportunity
There is absolutely nothing more beautiful than a cedar strip canoe.
This would be a perfect project for our older Eagle Scouts to do. They would leave something behind that would be used by generations of Boy Scouts. We have the lake, just not the canoe.
I made a cedar strip canoe nearly 7 years ago and it is a challenge that every woodworker should tackle during their tenure. It is challenging, very detailed and not a lot of room for error. There will be a ton of sanding and the fiberglass work entails speed along with a steady hand to ensure even coverage. When it is done, it will be the envy of the neighborhood or the lake. I get [ositive comments every time I take mine out for a cruise. They are really pretty.
This is a perfect project for the Cedar I have been drying for the last 3 years. It is all ready for re-sawing and coincidentally I have a brand new Re-saw blade for my Bandsaw. The stars must be aligning. All I need now are the books.
This is on the list. Glad to see some new information on the construction.
Its a a good thing I live close to the river because I don't think they would let me in the neighborhood pool with a canoe. Can't wait to get started, at least reading about it.
Have to build one of these.
This would be an awesome project to work on as a family
Plastic canoes are inelegant! Wood is the way to go, and this book will help its reader get there. Please enter me into the pool for the drawing.
I would very much like to own these two books. I am sure that the information contained in them will be quite useful in my canoe build. Thanks, Oliver
I would build a cedar strip canoe if I were the winner. T. Wilson
I have a copy of the original printing edition. It really is a classic, but a new and improved edition "wood" be a welcome addition.

A strip canoe has been in my plans for a long time. These books would be a great help.
I have done various.woodworking project but have to admit this one is on my bucket list. Truly pieces of art.
I bought this book over twenty years ago and built a Chestnut Prospector. We used it on frequent trips to boundary waters of northern Minnesota. Easy and very thorough
Something I've always wanted to try to build. Here's hoping.
Great winter project.
These two are on my shopping list, whether I win or not. Currently finishing up a 20' x 20' stand alone shop, should be enough to build a 16' canoe in!
WOW cool. Something like this would be a cool way to get my son and I to work in the shop. What a great way to use my late dad's woodworking tools.
I would like to have these two books so that I can make my own canoe and paddles to go with it. Something to build along with my nièces and nephews.
Great winter project.
I'd like these.
Love the canoes. I've been planning to try paddle making for a while, so very interested.
I have always been intrigued with canoe building--even dug outs. This would be a great way to learn how and test it on the waters of the Occoquan and Potomac rivers.
I need to get these books. I've been interested in building canoes for a long time, but it's pretty intimidating.
But can these books teach you a proper J-stroke?
I've been wanting to build a canoe, but my wife doesn't get why. Maybe a detailed book will change her mind.
I have been planning on making one of these for years...
I've been a 40+ year owner of a Grumann canoe. I am about to retire and always wanted to build a conoe. Very interested in this article.
I'd like to create my own canoe.
I built a strip canoe 35 years ago and recently sold it. I plan to build another one at some point and this book would be a good refresher course.
Please?
First, Stumpy Nubs' web site led me here; if there is an extra copy of Canoecraft laying around, please consider us. Lord willing, we will enjoy building our own canoe and taking it out with the kids. United States of America is not perfect, but we should be proud, and thankful to be blessed as we are. Thanks and until later, PapaPK.
I've built a couple of kayaks, these would come in handy for my next boat build!
I would love to have either of these books!
Awesome looking canoes! I would love to try to build one... I never have. Thanks for the opportunity to try to win one of these books!
I really love "Building a Strip Canoe" by Gil Gilpatrick (check it out too if you're interested), and I'd love to see how much more there is to learn from these other authors.
About 15 years ago, my then-10 year old son and I built a strip canoe, using Mac McCarthy's "Featherweight Boatbuilding." It was a great father-son project and remains a beautiful boat. Is it time to build another with his younger brother?
Just moved to a town on the Republican river and would love to build a project like this with my boys. I'm sure they would always remember the adventures they might enjoy!
My Dad has always wanted a cedar strip canoe, it would be such a great experience to build one with him! Thanks for having the giveaway!
It's okay, what if I try to build a canoecraft without this book
