Frequent contributor and finishing expert, Peter Gedrys, recently restored the furniture collection from the Lowes Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York. The theatre, which originally opened in 1929, closed in 1977, but in February 2015, ACE Theatrical Group of Houston reopened the theatre in its original splendor. The major refurbishment involved restoring the theatre to its original décor and Gedrys was commissioned to restore the lobby furniture.
When the theater closed, the manager was wise to purchase the lobby furniture and kept it safe for many years. She gave it back when she heard of the restoration. It was then Gedrys’ time to step in and restore a number of chairs and tables to their original condition. His favorite piece is a carved console table made in Paris by Henri Lemoine, whose father held a royal warrant from Napoleon III. Gedrys says that it had “22-karat gold leaf under gold radiator paint.”
The Kings Theatre is back in its glory, complete with the original, ornate lobby furniture, thanks in part to the work of Peter Gedrys.

The Lemoine carved console table is indeed exquisitely refurbished. I had occasion to sit in it in Mr. Gedrys' barn, where I believe the piece still remains.
