STL 87: Shop Talk Live Moving to Video
This week on Shop Talk Live, we’re launching a bit of an experiment rooted in the past. When this podcast first launched, it was presented via livestream video. We weren’t happy wit the quality of the video acheived via livestream so we canned it. Ever since then however, we’ve received frequent requests to bring back the video feed. On Monday, June 22, 2015, you’ll be able to watch the videocast of this very episode. Whether we continue to produce a video component for this podcast will depend upon the traffic it receives. We’ll keep you posted.
Enough about video. This week we’ll be answering questions on dovetail techniques, handplane rehab, plus a whole lot more.

Nice. Now we can all hear AND see Matt's snark.
It's just going to be stick figures drawn in crayon. I almost sure of it.
One recurring complaint about Shop Talk Live is that is is only produced bi-weekly.
Too bad the cost and energy that could have gone into a weekly show is being diverted into video. Many of us listen while we drive, are engaged in other activities, or as we calm down for sleep - we don't need a video of talking heads that provides no additional information.
Personally, I download a number of video podcasts, but rarely have time to watch them.
You mentioned an alignment jig/guide for use when cutting hand-cut dovetails. Where is the pic you mentioned you would post? :)
I love the stick figure and crayon idea. And as for Matt's snark. Sigh, there's only so much I can do, guys! Anyhow, the video will be up later today.
As far as going weekly is concerned--here's the deal: The podcast actually takes a good deal of preparation ahead of each recording. If we were to go weekly, that prep time would be cut in half and I fear the drop in quality that would result. While we're prepping and recording podcasts, we're also producing the magazine--no small feat. So for the time being, I'm still not sold as to the feasibility of a weekly show. The video component is actually easy for us, as we don't handle it. Our video department does. So while it would seem like a huge outlay of additional effort, it actually isn't.
That said, the fact that I repeatedly hear this request must mean that folks like the podcast, which is uplifting for us, quite frankly. The podcast for me at least, as much a labor of love as it is part of my "job." I just love sitting around talking about woodworking. That's it in a nutshell! Thanks for the comments, folks.
Best,
E
I just wanted to say that it's very unlikely that I'll be watching the video very often, but I couldn't resist tuning in to see this magical dovetail jig of Mike's. It was worth it.
Just thought I would mention this so you could "uncount" me from your metrics :P
The format kind of reminds you of Dan Patrick's show.
I'll chime in with a quick nod to the video format. I'm 99% a podcast audio guy but hopped on to see a few things from the latest show. I'm glad you're using Youtube as well because it means I can either Chromecast it or play it on my Smart TV. If it's not too much trouble I say keep it.
Keep on abiding...
I really enjoy the podcast. You guys provide a quality product. Sometimes though when you guys have been discussing jigs, fixtures or tools, like Mike's dovetail fence, it's really hard to visualize them. It would be great if you could just add some short video of those segments. I don't see a need to have a video of the whole podcast. I hope you have Asa back on the show again too. He hasn't been on in a long time.
P.S. I'm beginning to think that the only t-shirts Mike buys are maroon Carhartt pocket Ts.
Ed,
You could kill two birds with one stone as they say - replace Matt with the stick figures drawn in crayon. His snark would not be missed. Can't imagine what it's like to work around all the time, you have my sympathy. And one more vote for bringing back Asa - greatly missed.
I liked the video. It'll get better as y'all get more comfortable in your skin. One problem I've always had with FW podcasts was visualizing what was being said. For example seeing Mike's jig vs just a verbal description is much better.
Since video doesn't cause a lot of extra work, I say keep it, but for many of us that prefer listening to podcasts while driving, etc., do a separate audio podcast from the video. The best of both worlds, huh? If you want audio, your good. If you want video, you're good too. In other words each episode would have an audio and a video component. Alternative is to do 2 podcasts a month, one of them with a video for topics where video would help us visualize better.
Every other week is fine. If I listened to all the podcasts out there now I wouldn't have any time for woodworking (you can't listen while equipment is running).
Plus it gives you a one up on the competition. :)
Love the video. Yes I know I'm lame.
I've been listening for a month and have a little over 50 episodes under my belt and have to thank you for the tri annual update on how to set up a bandsaw. I had bought a 17" Grizzly some time back that is able to handle a 11/4" blade. It may fit, but I couldn't get the drift under control. So after listening to you guys repeatedly tell us that you could resaw anything with a 1/2" blade that was set up correctly, I followed your instructions and set up a 3/8" 3 TPI and was able to resaw beautifully and then couldn't help but to expand the test. I had a six inch thick piece of walnut set aside to cut a bowl blank from. The blade and saw performed beautifully. I had a perfect blank with vertical sides. Thanks Guys. Appreciate all the advice over the years and look forward to many more.
Really enjoyed the video of the podcast. being able to see you guys enjoying you "work" is great, hope the metrics agree.
Just a couple of points:-
Please don't hold your script up in front of your face when reading and lets see more of the items you are talking about, such as Matts plane.
One other thing, I don't use ITunes and when viewing the video the option to see it full screen isn't available which is a real chore for those of us over 40 with failing eyesight.
Keep up the good work.
Regards
Derek.
I won't watch the video every time, but think it's a great idea. Seeing Mike's jig was awesome. There are going to be things which just don't translate with audio and which I'll want to go to the video to really "get it".
It was interesting watching the non-verbals, which I enjoyed, especially after all of you (mostly) got over the weird of cameras recording.
It also helped me finally believe Matt is just really sarcastic and not a jerk. :-)
Keep up the esoteric...
Brian
P.S. Matt, you need more sleep and a little less attitude... :D
Moving to live video streaming is a good solution to reach more people, but I think perhaps you may want to think about post-editing before you post the show up for people who want to rewatch the episode.
