It’s been almost three weeks since I last wrote about my attempt to make 52 boxes in 52 weeks on the Fine Woodworking website. In that time I made another three boxes, bringing the total to 34 boxes. It’s hard to believe that I’ve made that many. It’s even harder to believe that this leaves just 18 left to be made. I think the biggest challenge going forward will be the fact that my shop is uninsulated and unheated. It can get really cold in there during the winter! I move all my glueups and finishing into the house, but all the making gets done in the shop. Unless it gets below freezing in the shop (and it has in the past), I work in the shop. Perhaps I need to invest in some kind of heater.
At any rate, here’s a bit about the three latest boxes. Box 32 is really a group of seven boxes that I made to store and display a sake set that belonged to my maternal grandparents. I don’t think the set is particularly valuable, but it was always in their home, and it has great sentimental value for me. I made box 33 to fit in the longer horizontal box in the group of seven boxes. It’s kingwood with a painted lid. I really like the circular mortise in the lid that’s painted white. I think it goes well with the douglas fir boxes that hold the sake set.
Box 34 has the same dimensions as box 33, and even many of the same construction details, but it’s quite a bit different thanks to a divider that creates two compartments and two lids.
If you’d like to read more about what into the design of these boxes (or any of the other 31 boxes), take a look at my blog, where I post and write about a new box pretty much every week.

Your boxes are very cool, & I appreciate this series you're writing about. However I'm afraid you're not going to make your goal.
yrmh1,
I didn't start until the end of April, so on Friday, November 27 I will have 22 weeks left to make 18 boxes. I have box 35 already done, so I really have 22 weeks to make 17 boxes. I'm pretty sure I'll get done. I'm guessing that you assumed I had only until the end of 2015.

Mike:
I have wonder how you were doing on your goal. I think your going to be close.
Thanks for letting me see you work.
Lovely boxes !!
Matt, I can sympathize with the cold winter shop, as my situation is similar. December through February can be tough, we just have to be tougher!
To the box maker..Nice journey... Lovely work!
Keep inspired and good luck making it to your goal!
Thank you for sharing your work with all of us readers/admirers. Your attention to design AND execution are to be admired. Your perseverance is inspiring as well!
As for the garage full of lumber (and shorts stored in the BR), well... a woodworker has got to do what a woodworker has to go to do!
Congratulations on a successful "journey" thus far and good luck with the remaining projects.
Nicely done Matt! For your box(es) 32, what design did you use for affixing them to the wall? A French cleat seems like it would be a bit of an overkill, but it's not apparent in the photos.
I did use a french cleat for each box, but it's small. I made them from 1/4 in. plywood. The back of each box is inset 1/8 in., so the cleat is 1/8 in. proud. This holds the box an 1/8 in. off the wall and gives the appearance that it is floating just off the wall.
