To properly center the blade in the handle, the scrap block should be ½ the handle thickness PLUS ½ the blade KERF (not plate thickness).
Correction: should be ½ handle thickness MINUS ½ kerf. But since the kerf is negative space could you say that adding it is really subtracting it?
