Scaling in SketchUp
Dave Richards is a fan of the scale tool, but not for everything. This short video shows a case where scaling wouldn't be the best choice and another example of where it is a good choice.During an online tutoring session one of my students asked me why I so rarely use the Scale tool when I want to resize something. He was referring to some demonstrations I’ve done in which I modify a piece of furniture to become a different piece as I did in Resize. Don’t Redraw. where I made a coffee table out of a side table. The majority of the resizing is done with the Move tool instead of the Scale tool. The Scale tool is kind of unusual, at least for many of the sorts of things you might need to modify in woodworking projects. The short video shows a case where scaling wouldn’t be the best choice and another example of where it is a good choice.

Thanks, Dave. I use that move technique a lot to change the size of cabinet doors. I draw up a 5 part door (2 stiles, 2 rails, and a panel), save it as a component, then make unique copies making changing their widths and heights as needed... I hope that makes sense.

Hi Chris, that does make sense. I do the same. I've done a few blog posts over the years showing how to do that sort of thing for more complex models.
Cheers,
Dave
