We polled our Instagram audience asking for gift ideas for woodworkers this holiday season, and they delivered. We tried to only include ideas that would be welcomed into any woodshop–no specialty tools here. Here are our favorite suggestions between $10 and $25.

Rulers rule!

You’re going to say “The last thing my beloved woodworker needs is another ruler!” Well, you’re wrong; you just are! I don’t go anywhere without at least seven methods of measuring something. That’s an exaggeration, it’s usually three. I have many rulers in my shop and they all have specific things I prefer to use them for. Not to mention that at any given moment half of them are missing. These two rulers each have their own unique features that would make them handy for any woodworker to have around.

Utilas hook rule – $12-$18

This ruler is great because you can grab it quickly, hook it to the end of a board, and instantly read the measurement at the other end. It seems silly, but these are HANDY to have around.

Incra Tiny T-Rule – $18

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that your favorite woodworker can be a little… um… let’s say… precise!  This Incra Tiny T-Rule will nurture that side of them and allow them to perfectly draw a pencil line in increments of a 64th of an inch. The only downside is that they are going to draw a bunch of lines on board, each 1/64 in. apart, to prove it to you.

Mora 106 Sloyd Knife – $25

“Ben, the only thing my woodworker has more of than rulers is knives!” But this one is different! It’s Swedish! The Mora 106 is a favorite of those who work green wood–especially spoon carvers. Every woodworker needs a knife that is is dedicated to carving and will never ever be used to open a package of batteries. There are more expensive Sloyd knives out there, but many woodworkers agree that they aren’t necessarily better. This is another where you don’t need to worry about duplicates. I have two of this very knife in my shop, and I wish I had three.

Stew Mac Tape Deck – $21

Your woodworker will never know what true luxury is until all of their favorite rolls of tape are lined up ready for action on a tape dispenser. I bought one of these a few months ago out of curiosity and it honestly brings a flash of joy to me every time I grab for blue tape–which is quite often. This tape dispenser is heavy and has a high-friction pad on the bottom that keeps it from moving all over the place. Katie, if you’re reading this, I kind of want another one or two under the tree this year, and don’t be surprised if I get you one as well.

Veritas Striking Knife – $18

A favorite of Megan Fitzpatrick, this striking knife packs a lot of bang for the buck. A sharp marking knife makes for more accurate joinery and this knife strikes the balance between sharp and affordable better than most. Megan will tell you that it’s really the only marking knife you need.

1-2-3 Blocks

I was surprised to see someone suggest this on Instagram, but after some thought I realized that it was a perfect gift for any woodworker. If your woodworker has a 1-2-3 Block they know how useful they are and probably can use more. If they don’t, they’re going thank you after using them. Simply a milled metal block that measures 1 in. by 2 in. by 3 in., it can be used in myriad imaginative ways.
