Thanks!
Thank you Bob for a most informative series on sharpening. I sharpen hand tools for shipwrights at a CT shipyard and have done about 4,000 to date. Nonetheless I learned a lot from your observations and analyses. Well done!
Been working wood for 50 years, still learned a great deal. Thank you for the update and the very fine video production .
I've been a devoted fan of Bob's No BS Advice & Counsel, including his previous series on sharpening. But now I want to go back and resharpen every tool I own, armed with his revised thoughts on the subject. I have long-since modified my jig according to his former explanations, and wish I could justify getting the Lie Nielson model. I really appreciate the new-to-me info on Cratex wheels, which is gold. As ever, thank you, BVD, and also FWW. You keep providing ways to easily justify my Unlimited membership.
I just finished the series and can't thank Bob and FWW enough. I am a terrible tool sharpener even though I've consumed many articles and you tube videos on the subject. This series is the most informative I've seen. Perfectly segmented and paced. Thanks again.
Great series on sharpening. I’m a retired woodworker and agree with him that the sharpening process should be as easy as possible or you eventually put it off, working with dull tools. For me one of the joys of woodworking is having your cutting tools produce those shiny end grain cuts or wispy hand plane shavings. I also found interesting the European vs American grit differences, that’s new to me. His simply jig for quickly getting the correct projection in the holder is my next project. Thanks Bob
Brilliant explaining
I put off watching this because I know how to sharpen my tools but now, I may have to rethink some of the methods I've learned in the past. Using a 6" grinder is just one of them. Thanks Bob
This is why I come to FWW to learn! Bob did such a great job of explaining what and why he was doing... and also giving us all a "sense" of how long it should take. I've watched dozens of people... but this was one of the most informative. I've been sharpening for years and been pretty successful... but I still learned so much! Thanks Bob... you are a great teacher!
Thanks for the source for the CRATEX products. I have used the Dremel sizes for 30 years to shape and polish the feet on the snake guides when building or restoring bamboo fly rods. Nothing else works as well. Then I could no longer find the burrs, and the ones I have left are worn down to nothing.
I have one wheel similar to what Bob shows that I use for sharpening gouges, but I chuck it in the lathe rather than the drill press. That gives me the tool rest for more stability.
Great products.
