Alex Stewart: Cooper
Watch the legendary mountain craftsman Alex Stewart demonstrate how to construct a churn. The audio on this video is less than stellar, but trust me on this one: It’s worth leaning in and watching this incredible video of 83-year old cooper Alex Stewart. This video was produced in 1973, so if I’m doing my math correctly Alex was born before the turn of the 20th century and started making wooden churns, buckets, barrels, and bowls before the Titanic set sail.

That was certainly worth watching, if only for the clever tip of using a stuffed sack to keep coopered components in place!
thought he was going to burn down that shop, while lighting hat pipe lol:)
That link to youtube worked fine, but the link from youtube to folkstreams.net didn't work - but I found it there - https://www.folkstreams.net/films/alex-stewart-cooper
That's odd. That's the link we have.
If you thought this was interesting, there is an entire book written on Alex Stewart’s life. I believe it is called Portrait of a Pioneer. Written by John rice Irwin, the founder of the museum of Appalachia where many Alex Stewart artifacts can be found. It’s bursting with interesting stories of pre-industrial life told by Stewart himself, discussing how those in Appalachia survived doing and making essentially everything on their own. As most goods were either unaffordable, or unattainable to rural Tennesseans. It is an amazing read.
Oohhh!!! Good to know! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/111059.Alex_Stewart
