Much has been said about the skill that goes into creating Japanese chisels and plane blades. This short video from YouTube channel Japanese Tools Australia beautifully demonstrates the work that goes into each chisel, including one of the defining characteristics of Japanese blades, the steel lamination process. I searched, but it didn’t seem like Japanese Tools Australia had a video of the grinding process—particularly how the hollow is made on the backs of the blades. It’s something I’ve always been curious about, so I found the video below that shows the process by the channel shurap.
