Using acrylic cauls for tricky glue-ups
Patrick Edwards uses thick acrylic cauls that allow him see that everything is where it should be while the glue dries.I know, I know, I know. Two restoration videos in two weeks?!! Well, kind of.
This video from Patrick Edwards’s YouTube channel is packed with great techniques that any woodworker can use. Just the other day I was gluing veneer using blue tape to hold everything in place. Unfortunately, the blue tape hid the fact that the pieces didn’t quite line up, and I wound up having to saw it apart and start again. It wouldn’t have been a problem had I used thick acrylic for my cauls. Next time!

The acrylic cauls are a great idea that I will try in the near future.
I have a suggestion for another Made You Look video:
If you watch British gardening shows as much as I do, then you will have seen these lovely handmade wooden garden baskets. A quick Google search showed me that they are called a Sussex Garden Trug, and have been around for about 200 years. A You Tube search lead me to this video of Bert Manton making one, the way he has been making them for more than 40 years. The lumber is cleft with a Froe, and trimmed with a draw knife on a shaving horse. The pieces are steam bent, and the whole thing is assembled by eye with no marking or measuring involved.
I was mesmerized for the whole hour. I hope you like it.
