Newest Episode of PBS Series Craft in America, HOME, Features Wharton Esherick Museum

Malvern, PA –  The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) is excited to announce the premiere of Craft in America’s newest episode HOME which features Wharton Esherick’s iconic home and studio alongside Philadelphia-based sculptor Syd Carpenter and craft icon Helen Drutt English.

A Peabody Award-winning series, Craft in America explores “America’s creative spirit through the language and traditions of the handmade.” HOME, which takes on the intimate topic of home from many angles – as architecture, personal objects and effects, and as the site of our familial relationships — premieres on PBS on December 16, 2022. Lee Valley adds a new miniature shooting plane and board and a replica honing guide

Combining our miniature shooting plane and miniature shooting board, this set offers a more precise alternative when working with stock you might ordinarily trim to length with a knife.

Just 5 5/16″ long, the plane is a fully functional 1:3-scale version of our right-hand shooting plane. The body is made of stainless steel, machined and ground with a sole and running surface that are accurately flat and square to one another. To make shearing cuts that leave a clean finish on end grain, the blade bed is skewed 20° to reduce cutting resistance. Combined with the 12° bed angle and 25° blade bevel, this yields an effective cutting angle of 36°. Weighing just over 5 oz, the plane has a walnut tote and a Norris-style mechanism that combines feed and lateral adjustments so you can set the 0.060″ thick A2 blade with precision.

The 8″ long, 3 5/8″ wide adaptation of our full-size shooting board is made of 11/16″ thick Baltic birch plywood, with a 3/8″ tall cleat on the bottom for solid registration against the edge of a workbench. The extruded aluminum track is sized for a precise fit with the 0.71″ wide running surface of the miniature shooting plane, ensuring it glides smoothly and tracks straight.

The fixed fence is accurately mounted at 90° to the track, and can be used with angle blocks or shop-made jigs for trimming miters or other angled cuts.

While this is set adds a measure of control to exacting work such as picture framing or kumiko, we cannot deny that it’s also irresistible to use as the ultimate workshop pencil sharpener.

A quick, effective aid to sharpening plane blades at 25° and 30° bevel angles, this tool is modelled closely on the Stanley #50 honing guide, patented in the U.K. in 1945. Straightforward to use and compact enough to carry in a toolbox, it was widely used in the trades, allowing a worker to touch up an edge whenever needed with minimal time and fuss.

Like the original, our version uses a roller that clamps onto the blade, keeping it held at the correct angle as you run it back and forth against a sharpening stone. For use with bevel-down blades with a 7/16″ to 9/16″ wide cap-iron slot, it has a machined aluminum body and a hinged stainless-steel registration arm, with etched markings to indicate the correct placement to register the blade at 25° or 30° to the stone. Simply align the blade edge with the chosen mark, tighten the knurled brass thumbscrew to lock the blade in the guide, swing the arm out of the way and sharpen the edge.

The brass roller has a slightly bellied profile, which, even if the guide is accidentally misaligned in the blade slot, helps prevent skewing the blade edge, since it creates a single point of contact with the surface of the stone yet permits a slight side-to-side rocking action to form a cambered edge.

Almost elegant in its simplicity, it is a decidedly low-tech tool, exactly as precise as your ability to align the blade edge with the reference marks by eye. While it may not offer the same reassurances of accuracy and repeatability as a modern guide, it provides a reliable, practical and easily portable way to quickly restore a serviceable edge.
